A layby on the A66 with location, the stone has an MOD Broad Arrow or Crow’s Foot stamp on it, I remember as a youngster bridges around where I grew up had them in brass plate set in lead core, they carried a reference number, which may have been connected to map reading by the army. Whatever had been civilian and now bore the stamp was now in control of the MOD, commandeered was the word. I also remember when aged probably about 7 or 8, two lorries arriving in our one hotel, one shop village, on board two drivers and a trilby hatted, trench coated gent, they were on a MOD commandeering mission of vehicles to be used in the war effort as it was called. My dad was in the Home Guard, I still relate and laugh at the tales he used to regale us with, like top of the essentials list when on manoeuvres was a hipflask Hey, you’ll have to excuse me, I’m off on a ramble again
Back to the layby at Stainmore and pictures therefrom.

Hi Oiltreader,
The “arrowhead” on the Stone is an Ordance Survey land boundary , as its close to the ■■■■■■■■■■■ Durham border. I think it also acts as a marker for Above Sea Level` ( A.S.L. ) Ordance mapping.
Hi Oiltreader,
tried to get a good one of this but he was to quick out of the gate lol
Strensham this morning after delivering to the NEC for next week’s caravan and motorhome show
cheers Ade

Maybe someone can enlighten us on more details.

Hi cwm, just been doing a bit o’ googling and the arrowhead is indeed connected with Ordnance Survey and normally has the arrow upwards to a horizontal line when depicting altitude above sea level and referred to as Bench Mark and found on buildings and Trig Points.
This is a reference to what I was getting at enfield-stuff.com/codes_&_ma … _marks.htm
