Chris, what happened to John Goldings? I don’t remember if they went bump or just stopped trading. Seems like one minute they were there and the next they were gone.

My father in laws dad drove this many years ago.

Who remembers this outfit from wayback…Harris Road Services

Aye I can remember Harris,s they had a contract out of Slough with Mars Bars, One of their drivers based at Darlington used to get into The Derry Café in the 50/60s , Cant remember his name but he was a canny lad, He drove a Bedford TK Box Van 4 wheeler in those days, Happy days may I add, Regards Larry.

That’s cleared up Lawrence, something that’s been with me for nigh on 50 years, as a lad going with my Dad on Nights to Manchester, on the way back he sometimes came down the A51 to stop at a cafe, can’t tell you where but it was between Stone and Rugley maybe, well one of Harris’s drivers gave me a Mars Bar, just one of those thing you never forget, I didn’t know they had the Mars contract.

Hi oily,
Great to see your thread going from strength to strength.here are a few from me.
Regards andrew.

I might be wrong so I stand to be corrected, but didn’t they just stop trading when John Golding died?

Hi Eddie, here’s a memory jogger from your Oxford Bus days, this is my Aunt Vera (mums side), she was a clippie from 1943-1960, also a pic of my Dads PSV badge when he was on there with you! Wish our buses were still painted those colours! Regards Chris

Hi Chris,
I remember Vera, her driver was Aubrey Westell, they were on One road(route 1) Oxford station to Littlemore, or Minchery Farm, or Florence Park, or Blackbird Leys. Even in them days there was a bus every five/ten minutes on the Cowley Rd (including the No 6 from The Corner House(at The Slade) to Elms Rise). Vera if I remember correctly told me she was also the only “clippie” on COMS to have been a driver just after the war.
On another topic, I have a clear vision of Charlie lighting a rollup and proffering a few sage words on how best to proceed with the next job to be tackled.
My own badge from my Oxford COMS days and a picture of the type of bus I passed my PSV in at Kirkcaldy in 1956, I was included in a group before my 21st birthday and had the badge and unform, a few days after my birthday.
With regard to driving, the instructor’s words have remained indelibly imprinted in my head…your passengers should not ever feel your gear changes, nor your braking, smooth it has to be laddie.
Eddie

This is part of the previous page, apologies for the non lorry topic, but in my time at Kirkcaldy depot there was decker body type that had wooden slatted seats, now there was a sharpish turn from the High Street into Coal Wynd, uphill, and it was not unusual for top deck travellers to finish up in the gangway :smiling_imp: …no warning of this during my test

Now back to lorries of which I snapped a fair few last week, all to come.

These taken a couple of weeks ago, A9 Helmsdale River bridge.

Same trip north, couple of weeks ago and compared to D Steven & Sons’s usual livery this is drab, obviously to be moved on, making way for the new Volvos, which carry 62 plates as D Steven & Sons will not have the “unlucky” 13 on a truck, both pics at Wick Harbour.

Not a lorry but I saw this at the Littlehampton Armed Forces Day.It is immaculate and by the number plate, it’s probably pre. 1963.
