Correct ! It was the Easter Gathering Road Run , Kirkby Stephen & Brough Rally.
The photographs were taken on Midland Hill, the A 685 out of Kirkby Stephen . A hundred yards further uphill is the
Kirkby Stephen Railway Station , …and the infamous low railway bridge.
I am sure the photos were taken a few years ago ( judging by the A.Bradshaw & Co.
Atkinson`s appearance).
At Easter Weekend, the fells -and the roadside- were covered in snow.
Happy to help, gentlemen.
Cheers, cattle wagon man.

Hi Carl,
Sam Ostle has operated bulk lime powder tanker artics for many years.
IIRC, he also had artic boxvans , - maybe 35 years ago - , but I don`t know what they transported.
He sold to Turners of Soham a couple of years ago, but the haulage depot still remains there.
Cheers, cattle wagon man.

Hi Victor and Cattle Wagon Man
Time goes by. It would be very early seventies, he had several Bedford luton Vans built by Marsdens painted blue and red if my meory serves me right. he had them before and after he moved into old station. I used to look out for them every weekend as I went past on my weekends in Blackpool.

Hi ,ROF, I remember the old ki gas ,it wasnt a big success after many near misses with fire ,my Dad said ihave been told pour a drop of ether down the air intake will do the trick so off to the chemist igo wat do you need it for/? told the man no way had to fetch Dad to explane they thought we were mad ,So had to sign the pioson regester every time it worked but only needed a wiff to much and locked the engine up ,then came arostart you could smell a hint of ether in that , just a bit of usless info, Cheers BarryHi Barry, that kicks off another memory, a can of stuff called Ezestart, to all intents and purposes ether… and strictly banned by the gaffer, so not for showing off, an overdose squirt of that into the air intake and the engine didn’t just start, it exploded into life, which could have dire consequences for the innards if overdone.

Only trouble with yon easy Start stuff was they became addicted to it, they wanted a sniff regularly. “If I catch any of you lot using that stuff I’ll sack you”. “Yes Fred, whatever you say Fred”
Fred Chappell, a great gaffer, a good man.
