Past Present and in Between in Pictures (Part 1)

Nice stack of hand-ball bricks there.
Just cant the outside bricks up onto the rave, to get the outer stack leaning inwards.

“She won`t go no-where, Drive” :smiley:

What was it? 6,000 house bricks for 20 tons?
About the same for roof tiles?

Didnt need gym membership in the 70s.

Just a few notes re these recent photos on this thread.

Henry Thompson was from Pelton Fell above Chester le Street, he ran a few tippers back in the sixties when there was a lot of Open Cast coal sites on the doorstep. Henry died a few years ago and his son Ian runs a Volvo unit and Low Loader, does a fair bit of Plant for AB Volvo who have a workshop/sales depot at Portobello, Birtley behind the motorway services.

Laws Stores were a large retail concern based in Gateshead and had numerous grocery stores around the NE. IIRC they eventually disappeared into the Presto organisation. My Mother was manageress of the store in Coatsworth Road, Gateshead just after the war, still keep in touch with the errand boy that worked for her and went on to manage his own store, he’s 94 now !!

You’re spot on coomsey, it’s amazing how much water bricks absorb, as you say rain overnight and the weight goes up enormously.

Revman asked;

It has the front end of the military Berliet but the cab will have had some work done to it as the military version had a soft roof. Franky.

I believe it is a Berliet. And I think it does have a canvas roof too.
