Past Present and in Between in Pictures (Part 1)

I saw this AEC in Oz, at the National Road Transport museum in Alice Springs. Some claim it was the tractor for the first road train.

The two extreme axles, driver and steered, are identical. But why are the two central ones which, I understand, are only driven, not similar?

I suspect to avoid the steering geometry and slightly complicated linkage that would be liable to damage off-road. Remember that when this was built and shipped to Oz there were few metalled roads so I imagine the AEC engineers kept it pretty basic. Many Oz roads are still dirt nearly 90 years later!

Buzzer would it be OK to post the Scammell with the IH 74s on the Farming Forum classic section?
Thanks

Hi Oily, Yes these are the ones, they often run in convoy.
Cheers. Leyland 600.

The AEC Roadtrain went on trial to Australia, South Africa and Russia in the 1930s.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AEC_Roadtrain
I have posted this photo before a roadtrain that preceded the AEC in Australia and was the invention of a German engineer. The twin engined prime mover generates power and transfer to electric motors on the trailer axles, can’t for now remember the name of the engineers so a google it has to be.

Edit
Falkiner was Australian of Irish descent and Muller was German.

A murky morning and a nice reminder to those of us who are retired, that all we have to do this morning is to put the kettle back on

Always been an early riser my day starts 5.30amish with a cup o charlie, cereal breakfast plenty fibre  necessary meds, midday meal, early evening snack bed 9.00pm later if footie is on or a good documentary etc. Over the winter months quite a bit o time on the internet and a big crossword(cryptic) fan but prefer outdoors if weather allows. Anybody else care to own up to their daily routine, can’t be many of our age group that are medication free.

Between 8 and 9 for me now, unless the dragon lady who comes in once a week to look after my wife is due, then it’s much earlier.
BTW Oily, I do hope you mean a cup of char, that is tea. My street cred Wiki tells me:

What is known as Charlie?
Cocaine, a drug sometimes referred to by the street name “Charlie”

Up around 5.00a.m cuppa, medication for 1 hour or so (except on a Saturday or Sunday then it’s 3 hours) breakfast usually cereal, another cuppa, doing lots of jobs on my house, latte in there somewhere, 12pm usually dinner, afternoon more medication for around an hour or so, 5pm something light for tea, football on tv (unable to go to live games at the moment as I’m clinically extremely vulnerable) if the football is crap or I lose interest bed at 9pm.
