Past Present and in Between in Pictures (Part 1)

Interesting videos MRM, I had seen the one featuring Dennis Buntine, who would have been there at the time I was, but never met him. In fact my comment from 3 years ago is the last one in the list below the vid.

The 1973 one is after my time, there were no cabovers when I was there except a former Buntine driver who had bought his own Mack and paid a visit. The blokes were all over it as there were no sleepers there at the time.

A bit surprised that they had a cane cutting machine in that 1947 film. Although I wasn’t in a normal gang cutting the burnt cane, those were close knit affairs who came together each season, but I was working in the fields in the late 60s and thought they were still all working by hand. Not sure what all the panic was about the fire though, they set the fields alight on purpose at cutting time.

This isn’t your uncle is it Oily.
Only joking mate.

Hi mushroomman  … thanks, I’ll treasure that as it’s one of his machines for sure in the video.

Buzzer:
Fridays lot, Buzzer

Buzzer asked what marque and model of motorcar is in the photograph printed below

I’ve had a look at some famous European luxury motorcar marques, such as Hispano-Suiza,Isotta-Fraschini,Minerva,etc. At first I thought that the mystery car

might be an Hispano-Suiza,but it isn’t…but nevertheless the Hispano-Suiza hypothesis did give me a clue as to the actual marque of motorcar  as will be explained later,QV.

I then turned to my beloved American motorcars and certain luxury motorcar marques:Cadillac,Lincoln,Franklin,Stutz,LaSalle, etc…Ha ha! :exclamation: - LaSalle! :exclamation: Eureka! :exclamation:

Yes. LaSalle  And this is where the Hispano-Suiza clue comes in: The famed and revered car designer and car stylist,Harley Earl,1893-1969,worked for the General Motors Corporation =

GMC = General Motors and was hired by GM to style a new car marque and model,in late 1925.Harley Earl was influenced by the styling of the French-built Hispano-Suiza motorcar models,

especially in regard to the radiator, radiator grille,hood-bonnet louvers and headlights. The new car marque and its models were introduced in 1927 and the make-marque name was in

honour of the French explorer René-Robert Cavalier Sieur De LaSalle,22-11-1643 - 19-3-1687,who claimed the American state of Louisiana for King Louis XIV in 1682.

The reason for the new luxury marque of automobile - car La Salle was as a cheaper companion for GM’s top price luxury motorcar marque Cadillac. The Cadillac was also named after

a French explorer,Antoine Laumet De La Mothe Cadillac,5-3-1658 – 16-10-1730,who founded the famous American Motor City: Detroit! :exclamation:  in 1701.

The LaSalle motorcar marque existed from March 1927 to 1940 - prototype 1941 models were built but LaSalle was unfortunately dropped, and was replaced by the cheaper

Cadillac 61 range for people who wanted to own a Cadillac but couldn’t afford to buy the more expensive Cadillacs.

The LaSalle marque name has popped up occasionally over the decades on certain General Motors experimental and/or dream cars plus pre-production cars.

Also from 1927 GMC employed Harley Earl as the head designer and chief stylist in the new Art & Colour Section of GM that styled GMC motorcars and other motor vehicles;it was re-named

the Styling Section in 1937.Until his retirement in 1958 Harley Earl was a major influence and innovator on car styling - he introduced the tail fin to cars for example - and came up

with dream cars such as the beautiful Buick Y-Job of 1939.

Anyway,I may be wrong, but I am ninety-nine percent certain that Buzzer’s big mystery car is an American-built LaSalle 345A,Fisher or Fleetwood-Bodied,7-Passenger Touring Sedan

Motorcar of 1931. Fisher and Fleetwood bodies were body options. NOTE:The louvers on the hood-bonnet were replaced by ventilator doors during the production of 1931 LaSalle

cars, and some LaSalles and Cadillacs from this era also had the optional wire-mesh stone guard on the front of their radiators which altered the appearance of the radiators. Also some

LaSalles from this era wore the optional Heron Radiator Ornament or the Goddess Radiator Ornament - the LaSalle in the photograph below has no such ornament.

Double Indemnity (1944),stars Fred MacMurray,Barbara Stanwyck,Edward G.Robinson, directed by the great Billy Wilder and written by Billy Wilder and Raymond Chandler,is a Classic Five

Star film noir drama - I always think about the 1937 LaSalle Touring Sedan Motorcar in this great film whenever I think about LaSalle motorcars,QV photograph below. The film is about a
