These photo’s have come up on the Great Ayton village facebook site, sad day around 1981 when A Stevens sold up, vehicles parked up on front of yard for auction everyone would have been a good buy as fleet was well looked after by fitters and drivers alike.
Taking a wee advantage of the speed limit at North Kessock Inverness and the Volvo at Brodick Isle of Arran.

Heres another couple of pic’s of the A.Stevens Foden you posted today.Great photos as usual, I am pretty sure the top picture is the entrance to SDI and SC, Malleable Works, Stockton, also the other photo. In the top picture you can see the driver, again I am pretty sure it is John Suggitt, from Great Ayton where A. Stevens were based, he later worked for British Oxygen at Teesport where my Dad worked for 20 years. I knew a few Stevens drivers over the years, as I recall it was one of the better companies to work for in the area. Keep up the good work, I love this thread.
Hi Mizzo.
Did you know this A Stevens driver in a MK5 Mandator? Photo taken in Thirsk market place pre by-pass days, where I’ve parked many times.
I remember ringing them when I worked for C H Preston Sheffield late 60s to get a backload but they were only interested in artics not Albion Reivers.
Fun n games on the pavor, first time I went on one I hadn’t got a clue the laying gang soon put me right

Hi Chris.
Driver in photo is Dennis Robinson. Stevens were nearly all steel or pipe work out of Teesside so would very rarely have any small backloads. They did in the later years start to do a bit of storage /warehousing in the unit on the right in earlier photo when another operator Curtis Moody who ran the mill in Great Ayton became part of the Dalgety group and unit was sold off.

I rekon so, they did their own surfacing and had their own plants and made a cracking job of the roads… When travelling south from Berkshire you could always tell where Hampshire began as your car suddenly stopped riding on square wheels!
Paul my first time on a paver was uphill in Leek so not too bad, I did get shouted at with many different dialects over the years though! Nowadays they have banksmen to watch over you, they hadn’t been invented when I started and you were left to muddle your way through and guess which way the machine was turning before you lost a mudguard and lights!!
Pete.

Yes Mizzo,RAH Transporters from Darlington and Brunskills were the same, long loads.I did get a load out of Hartlepool off a Hartlepool haulier but the name of them escapes me at moment.I notice A V Dawson are still operating, running Teesside docks or something like that.

Hi Chris, jshepguis,
I didn’t know Dennis, when I first saw the photo I thought it was an Ayton chap by the name of Peter Shore, he worked at BOC with my Dad and often visited our house for tea/Sunday lunch. Peter was working at the haulage company I started my apprenticeship at in 1968 so he definately went down the ladder job wise. He is in this photo 2nd left, my Dad is on the left, the photo was taken at a round of the LDOY, early 60’s I think.

It was a game Pete, I took my eye off the ball n dropped a ton in front of the machine,ye gods they went berserk ! Never let me forget that one. Downhill could be bad n coming up to junctions, I was in Thrapston crossed over the main road n approaching the pavement n some t**t came down the path rather than wait, mind you there was two hopes of the Blaw Knox driver stopping

No idea how far he was going like that but it wouldn’t be for me. Asking for trouble imo.
