Ashbourne market place sometime around mid 1976 but luckily not on market day! Aiden Hares dad’s artic ran away down Buxton Hill (lost his trailer brakes I believe?) and ran into the back of Buddy Wheildon driving George Siddall’s Bedford KM. Buddy rarely passed a pub anyway and apparently the rescuers were searching the wreck for him when he emerged from the British Legion asking what they were looking for. He had been inside calming his nerves with a few drinks.

Pete.

As long as nobodies hurt all’s well. Never had brake fail/fade thankfully. I was coming up to the A5 from Nuneaton with a load of coal on,n heard a thud, takes some doing with a Gardner. Never gave it a lot of thought until I went for the brake n a down shift, the pedal had sheared off at floor level ! I took notice then mind , the parking brake did the business n drove it home. Next day I was up to ERFs with the two part pedal, they wanted to have it tested.
Never heard anything about it after. About 2yrs later I was going down that steep sod off hill towards Staveley steel works n lo n behold on my left was the same ERF in the middle of a field with a bus stop wrapped around her. Pedal shear ? Driver brain fade ? Never found did find out. Cheers coomsey

Bit of a shock seeing that pic Coomsey. I drove for Aidens Dad Jim for about 6 years, starting in Nov 68, driving a couple of Guy Invincibles. To cut a long story short, the brakes on the Guys where, as i usually described them, wishful thinking. .On Easter Saturday 1969 i started the descent from the Bowling Green pub, 2nd gear as usual. I knew from the word go that the brakes where not going to hold so pulled the Guy left into that big stone wall outside the church. That stopped her. Jim Hare pulled me back up into Windmill Lane with his AEC Mammoth Major and some chains. The following day i was towed back to Lifford by Miers of Wolverhampton, though i had to help push their wrecker up the old Clifton hill.
I never had a moments problem with the AEC brakes, compared to the Guys they where in another league.
Then Jim changed over to Scania 110s with York tandem Welford bodies tippers.
The Scanias at 32 ton would drop down from the Bowling Green in 2nd almost entirely on the exhaust brake with just a touch on the service brake as you curved into the open Market Place.
Yes it was slow, but it was safe… Obviously i cannot comment on what may or may not have caused the accident in the photo…I had moved away to Worcestershire by then so my last run for Aidens Dad would have been 1974(ish).
From the pic i can see it is a artic, so i assume it was one of the Scanias, though i seem to recall Jim had at least one 111 by then,.
Oddly enough i cannot find any newspaper article or picture covering this event.
Incidently, mentioning Aiden Hare, who i remember as a school boy, i still have a Mamod Steam Engine, minus some bits and pieces, that was languishing at the Hares home in Kings Norton, given to me by Aidens Mom.!!

Thanks Oily , bit wiser now

I wonder if the second GUY in this photo was the one below which was converted to a tractor unit and possibly so it could do this type of work, the leading GUY also looks to have been a converted four wheel tipper judging by the wheelbase. Franky.

Those rear brakes need adjusting.

Earlier today, I took a detour to avoid some long term roadworks on my way back from posting some letters
at the main Royal Mail sorting office. As I went through Martland Business Park, I saw these 3 fridge lorries
from Murcia in South East Spain in a queue waiting to unload at the enormous H.J.Heinz factory at Kitt Green.
I had a quick chat to the drivers with my limited Spanish lingo…" Mi habler Espanol un pocito "… their use of
the English language was no better than my Spanish  . With today being December 27th, I reckon they must
have been on their journey to here on Christmas Day.

Feliz Navidad y prospero ano nuevo. Ray Smyth.

Love the Bedford/Queen Mary combo, with the bomber finely balanced on the back, and tied down with 2 un-dollied bits of rope, apparently.
