An old friend of mine from CPS Gateshead moved to Sanqhar, he bought the fish and chip shop, he also worked for Yates for a while before his very serious illness. His name is Paul France, I was asking the driver of the vehicle I photographed if he was still around, and apparently he was in Yates yard recently. I hope he sees this thread. regards Kevmac47.
Kevmac Just where I took the photo of Yates motor there is a cafe in the car park and I am sure that is ran by the Partner/Wife of an ex CPS driver which would be the chap you are talking about I dont know him but sometimes see her opening up in the morning I will mention it to her. Eddie.
Thanks Eddie, it would be great to hear from Paul after all these years. Regards Kev.

when i was a kid,few welsh firms could match the classy livery of gwynne bowen from gorseinon .
Iâve been in that yard a number of times when I was the trailer mate on the Brady Octopus Andrew, when we got tipped in the Abbey fairly quickly some Monday mornings Bowens manager Jack Reece hadnât got all his traffic sorted so he would say,ârun into the yard Boyoâs and Iâll have something for you presentlyâ ! Thats where the Old man and his son Vivian would sometimes be,but Jack was the man that sorted out the traffic. Now,lets see how about 20 ton of tin plate for West Houghton, will that do you Brady boys !!! Great times and a great haulier !! Cheers Dennis.

Leyland 680 Yes there motors where smart all with sideboards for the tin plate nearly same colour as Bradys. What about the digs in Gorseinon forgot what the lady was called but Home from home Frank
Do you mean Walfords Cafe in Llansamlet Frank, the old lass that owned the cafe was Ma Phillips she lived further up the road in a posh house, her son ran the cafe.We used to back the Octopus down a bit of dead end road at the side of the digs and one night some coppers came rushing in to ask us to move and let them out with their car, theyâd been spying on some âboyosâ over the back.Possy wasnât for moving it until heâd finished his supper so he told me to pull it up and let them out !! âWhat were the daft buggers doing there in the first place, why didnât they shout up when we parked upâ no give with Possy when anyone official challenged him !!! Cheers Dennis.PS great digs, you went into the back yard wash house for ablutions !! The old lass always bought us a drink in the boozer at night, one of Robsons âstar menâ was knocking her off at the time, his nick name was ââ â â â â Normanâ he got a new Foden every 6 months !!

No this was in Gorseinon . Also would not go further than the bungalow at Ludlow on a Sunday good old paper log sheets and rubbers. Wink Wink Frank
Halftimers !What about the clean strip on the bottom where the ârealâ hours were logged then âAuntie Bessieâ snipped the strip off and destroyed the evidence !! Dennis.
The best use of a logbook, as I remember it was for getting a nights kip at home on a dodgy, that said the input of pictures and craic is good and because b. waddy is enjoying the pics, hereâs a few more with a decent livery in mind.

Hi Oily, 50 years ago last August I started my haulage career as Jim Lawsonsâs first full time driver on a Mouth Organ fronted Leyland Comet progressing to a new LAD cabbed Albion Clydesdale a few weeks later. Happy days hauling sheep from â â â â â â â and the Borders to Liverpool and Banbury.
Cheers, Leyland 600.

Good on you, I passed my test in 1952 in a 3ton Bedford furniture removal van which became a bit more when loaded to the gunnels including piled high on the dropdown tail board complete with tarp cover, mind you to start with I was only allowed behind the wheel when empty, but went on to move all sorts of stuff other than furniture, memorably, loads of of straw (my bossâs son had a farm). In Feb 1956 bus driving was the next move and lorries in '62, hey I digress with waffle, more to the point, another Lawson picture for you.
