If you don’t have a passport, can you travel into Europe with just a driving licence (photocard and counterpart)?

Absolutely not, I once had mine taken from me during a ’ cab turn out’ by the ‘Douannies’ at Dieppe, the ferry had almost finished loading by the time they’s satisfied themselves and the little rat didn’t give it me back, in my hurry I forgot. Untill I was in the immigration cue in Newhaven, i explained to the bloke in the window and he accepted my driving licence but I wouldn’t try going anywhere without it.
Ross.
I found it better to leave the cab while waiting for the Dieppe boat, the Douanes are floating around then to check out the load and CMR,when resting on the bunk, they dont knock my door, but have waited for me to be visible, then carried out a control. In the summer i would cycle off to the swimming pool on the sea front,it is heated with sea water, and hot as a bath tub, even in winter months. In Le Havre, they have the “Bains des Docks”,inside/outside pools,of which were designed by a famous french architect.
i can confirm that you could leave the country
by train without your passport
and that on the return journey they aint amused when you
tell them that your passport and licence and money are in your girlfriends car
but at least on talking to her they let me back in

try it in spain and see how much the fine is
and before all the “crazy spanish fines” quotes its not just for truck drivers, everybody must carry their passport or spanish id card at all times technically.
also a little known law is you must have some money on you or funds available via a bank card or you could be arrested for vagrancy

It must be the reason the Spanish have these spurious amounts like €3101. They stop you, fine you and empty your pockets, and then arrest you for vagrancy

it must be a brit thing with the odd figure on the fine 'cos every time i or another driver i know gets fined with a spanish vehicle its always a round figure and not normally broadcast everywhere about how much and what they were doing
Weird isn’t it. The EU says you must allow free movement without let or hinder to all EU residents in all EU states and the Brits and Spanish just ignore it. How come they can ignore some bits but not the ones we’d like them to ignore?

We have an opt out of the Schengen Acquis.
Spain just make their own rules up, probably under the terrorism act
Forgotten my passport a couple of times due to unit change/service etc…both times coming back into UK via tunnel and both times flashed my driving licence…no problems

Ahem, would that be the ANTI “terrorism act”■■

Well it does seem quite popular in Hispania. I don’t think they are against it at all

I went over with the car just before Christmas via the tunnel, handed over my Belgian photo ID card and was told by the snotty immigration woman that it was no good.I asked why?
“Because it doesn’t state what nationality you are!”.Even though, quite clearly printed on the back it say’s,Nationaliteit:UK.
So,I whipped out my British passport and stuffed that into her petty hand!
I hired a car in Lanzarote with my Digi Card once, I just told the guy it was the future
I had taken the wrong card with me
What you are forgetting is when they let you back in with just a driving licence is the computer systems. They have this thing called E Borders. You can get in, but i bet they check that you have a passport on the system. Having said that, before 9-11 i got on a plane in Malaga by claiming i had lost my passport, got back in at gatwick with no problem and then when i got home found my passport in my bag. Post 9-11 i don’t think you would be able to do it.
