Passed in a W&D , need familiarisation in an Artic?

Hi,

Just Passed my C+E in a 60ft wagon and drag, my question to you is do you think it wise if i have a days training / familiarisation on an Artic before looking at work or is it a waste of money? Just curious… Do they really handle drive all that differently? Sorry if its a Stupid question , I’m new to all of this

When we first moved on to W+D for our CE training, I insisted on keeping a full size artic. I believed that, although people had passed a test, they would not actually be capable of driving an artic. I was proved totally wrong with 30 people I took out with no instruction after they had passed a test on W+D.

You will need 30 seconds instruction with the 5th wheel coupling. Few people can really claim to be able to reverse anything with any sort of trailer without quite a lot of experience. So yes, the reversing is different. So you will get used to it.

Having said all that, the best advice has to be to have 3 or 4 hours on an artic - if only to build confidence. That alone will make you a safer driver and that has to be good.

But if cash is tight, common sense will see you through.

All the best, Pete

That

If anything do an hour getting to grips with the un-couple/re-couple procedure.

I passed with Pete Smythe above on WnD and then went to a local school and did a Refresher Session on a full size Artic.

So long as you are confident on the 3 main differences…

Reversing
Coupling / Uncoupling
Allowing for trailer cut in

The rest is the same as a WnD.

Thanks for the advise guys
