I thought the young lady incident would come up. I was harsh on her to shock her. Maybe she has no dad or he is unaware pf what she is about to do but I was giving her a rough time because everyone else was meekly saying go for it. This young woman has a place in University and a chance to have a great life with a worthwhile career. She is on the verge of tossing that aside to drive a flipping truck (class 2) as she liked it. Sorry but I stand by everything I said to her and I bet she do it anyway but she is makig a life mistake if she gives up university for this lot.

I don’t know the girl, but all I can say from my experience is that having been to uni. after being a driver for so many years and now seeing so many graduate these days, there will come a time (and it is already happening) that real workers will be very scarce. The country does not need more graduates, it needs more workers to keep industry and commerce going. In fact there are so many graduates now that most end up working in supermarkets if they don’t make the 2:1 or above grade or don’t commit to teaching. If she is happy being a worker (driver) let her do something useful in life (there’s no shame in it at all) other than joining the tens of thousands of sausage factory students who think that they are above others, when in fact they’re up to their eyeballs in student debt (like me). :open_mouth:
Having a degree used to mean something, but having an HGV and some experience is worth more in this work shy society. :imp:

HGV’s and PSV’s are so valuable aren’t they? That is why they give them away with any p45 the Government gives out. 5000 demobbed squaddies recently at Catrick. Then you have thousands of foreigners with them and then you have the age lowered to 18. Also retired police, fireman ambulance drivers etc. topping up their nice pension so undercut you. On top of that you are expected to pay for your own medicals, CPC, digicard and for more and more con artists who run agencies, boots, helmets, work gear etc. I am looking for a job now having jacked in for the agency last week and it is hard to get a decent full time job. I can sign on for a load of agencies who will happily keep me on their books because they want to rotate drivers into the real naf jobs that nobody wants working 15 hour days ■■■■■■■ two man loads and driving a load of rubbish that is ■■■■■■■■■■■■ at best. There are HGV nightmare accidents on the roads of Britain almost daily and some scary stories but the agencies could not care less as they are making a mint of the backs of drivers. Since the 80’s big firms who employed decent drivers have let natural wastage take its course and gone to agencies replacing decent drivers on a good wage with an agency who supplies anybody for peanuts. Agency earns, client earns as they save on costs pension etc. and the drivers suffer. The industry has been in decline for over 30 years. Country is flooded with cheap labour so flick over to the new and wannabe drivers thread and see how many passes there were this week! By 2020 HGV drivers will be on £9 - £9.50 per hour. I think that young woman had better chances with a degree because any degree will get you a management job in a supermarket etc. Depends what her degree would have been.

" By 2020 HGV drivers will be on £9-£9.50 per hour…"

Stop talking ■■■■■■■■. I earn £10 per hour now. Are you really saying that my wages will go down every year for the next 5 years?

Go and get yourself a coffee, then have a lie down.

He’s not saying your wages will go down. He’s saying those who earn less than that, will rise to £9 odd by then.

NMW or ’ Living wage ’ as Osborne has called it, is guaranteed to be £9 per hour by 2020. Truck drivers are on more than that NOW.

So how on earth would someone believe that truckers wages will be static, or in most cases, reduced, by 2020?

Talking of ■■■■■■■■ has taken hold.

■■■■ right. If truckers could get the same wages for a no-stress job stacking shelves then they would. Employers will be forced to pay more to stop us leaving.

Are you guys not aware of Pollocks paying their drivers £7 p/h?

Put it this way; 4 years ago, MRS, who were only down the road from Pollocks in Bathgate were paying their drivers £375 per week (before deductions) for 60 hours. That works out at £6.25 per hour.

So, if you ask me, it’s very believable that Pollocks are paying their Scottish based drivers £7 p/h. Any Road Haulage firm pays accordingly to what the supply and demand is in the local area. If they know they can get willing bodies to drive their 44 tonne trucks, for that rate, they’ll pay exactly that.

Which part of the country are you? What rate are you on?

I’d want £7 an hour on top of what I earn now to drive something with a livery like that. Even their Magnum looks minging. Can’t believe a company that has a private plate on every motor has the gall to pay such a crap rate. I was getting more than that for 7.5t work four years ago. And I thought THAT was an insult.

And a couple of thousand years ago, we hunted our food and lived in caves.

Are you keeping your lot afloat this weekend again?

Of course buddy. Living the dream!!!

“Living the dream” now but the nightmare is just around the corner.

The nightmare arrived the second you pressed 'submit '.

is alder talking ■■■■■■■■ again?! God we have to keep him under control don’t we. yes there are hgv jobs out there paying a poor wage but lets face it they all have 0 applications. im going for a job advertised at 32k a year yep that’s a bloody brilliant wage but most class 2 jobs are advertised at 28k in my area which is still above the wage of £9 which you are saying wages are not going to drop they can only go up and we are in such demand that they are going to have to give us a wage increase and more perks to tempt us to work for that particular company!
