Passed Category C . Any tips?!

I passed my category C license on my second attempt on 30th March 2015. I’m only 21 years old and I love driving and want this career for the rest of my life, are there any tips that you can give a new young starter. Haven’t yet done my module 4 just waiting for my license to come back in the post, but what are the main tips?!

An ability to think ahead, remain calm and be patient.

Best to progress to CE asap. More choice, more money, less work. (All sweeping generalisations of course).

All the best with your Mod 4.

Tour local industrial estates and knock on the door of anyone running trucks - not just hauliers. Speak with the transport manager and don’t be fobbed off. If he/she isn’t available, find out when they will be and arrange to meet them then. You must persist.

Keep a record of where you’ve visited and what follow up action you need to take.

Hi-vis, boots, night out bag in car and make it clear you can start NOW.

Develop a thick skin.

Don’t expect to pick up great work on the first call.

Age isn’t as great a barrier as it has been previously. The biggest barrier is lack of perseverance.

Go for it. Pete

I passed with a company called A.Hingley in the Midlands and they were brilliant and actually have offered me to do my Arcticulated so I may take that into consideration thankyou  Its all so new and I haven’t left my job current job just yet, big steps but I’m so looking forward to it!

Don’t get ahead of yourself and think you can do it all and don’t go faster than you can process it, hooning it will get you into trouble. As a relatively new starter myself (21 as well) I know the above to be true and soon you’ll settle into it, just give it time and patience.

Move on to C+E reasonably quickly before you develop bad habits (6 months was bad enough for me).

Don’t overthink things, when reversing divide up the space into stuff you can use and stuff you can’t, watch the n/s front especially and don’t be afraid to get out and look.

Oh and the first time you get a loading bay you’ll probably back on with the doors still shut

Last but not least, if you’re not sure about something, ask. But bear in mind an agenda if it’s with your office.

Yeah the company that taught me offered me to do my c+e but I want to get the feel for driving as a living first so I am definitely going to be ringing them back in the near future for that.

Making silly mistakes like leaving the door shut or just over all silly things is what scares me, but I suppose it’s all a learning curve, I take onboard anything anyone says because someone who’s done it always knows best

Best advice I can give as some one coming up to nearly been on the road for a year is , crack on drive.

You’ll make mistakes and you’ll want the ground to swollow you up. But as long as you learn from them you’ll be fine.

Best of British to you mate.

Don’t be! You will make silly mistakes like that but 99.9% of us have. There’s simply no point worrying about it. Concentrate on the job in hand, driving.

Gareth, you seem to have an excellent attitude, based upon your posts. As others have said, we all make mistakes so don’t sweat it.

I am sure you will be fine. You need to be able to talk ■■■■■■■■ though. Its an essential requirement for a truck driver.
