Oh just the guy I look like I need to talk to regarding ADR. Would it be a better idea to wait until i’ve done my C+E before getting my ADR or is it a case of do it when you can? Would I be able to put myself through it or is it usually done by working for a company that require it?

Talk to your training center where you’re doing your C+E, most do ADR and crane training too. You can do it as soon as you want, and I believe (although am happy to be corrected) if you had grandfather rights and therefore don’t have to do your CPC right now (but before Sept) your ADR training will count towards CPC hours as well! (Bonus!)

ADR will also open up job opportunities that as a newly qualified driver you might struggle to get a chance with (someone with a valid ticket will always be preferable to someone who needs to be trained at a cost to the employer).

If you get on well with your current trainers you might even be able to get a deal to tack the ADR on the end of everything else you’re doing at a discount (if you don’t ask you won’t get). There’s also lists of good ADR trainers on here too (seen them somewhere!).

Thank you , yeah i’m not partial to the grandfather rights (only 23  ) But I will talk to the people I did my Cat C with as im gonna go back an do my C+E with them as I now know the test routes as such.

Yeah the more feathers I can stick in my cap the better

Hi TheMissus,

The thing that I’d suggest needs to be borne in mind is that even if a driver attends a course qualifying for Periodic DCPC hours, those Periodic DCPC hours can’t be uploaded until a driver is “on the system.”

A driver gets to be on the system by either:

  • Grandfather rights obtained by passing a car driving test before 01/01/1997, or
  • Grandfather rights obtained by passing an LGV test on or before 09/09/2009, otherwise…
  • Passing Initial DCPC.

If a driver isn’t on the system yet, I’d advise them to hold on and concentrate on getting their Initial DCPC before taking an ADR course so that their Periodic DCPC time is best utilised. (It’ll probably be cheaper that way too. )

Of course, if the need is urgent, anybody with a DVLA issued driver number (Eg, they only have a B licence) can take an ADR course.
Their ADR licence will be valid for whatever vehicle types they hold a driving licence for, and as far as ADR is concerned, they need take no further action upon passing a driving test because their ADR licence remains valid for whatever driving licence categories they hold.

Coold, this makes sense, thanks.

Would he not go onto the system for the mod 2 & 4 that he’d need not having the 1997 rights? (Will be same situ for me shortly, not having either rights). Although I guess he may not have done both of those just yet either…

Agreed an ADR course is expensive, I thought about trying to add ADR to my courses but the C and C+E is going to wipe me out as it is even with a discount or two.

It’s a minefield, thank goodness for TruckNet!

I am going to adapt DDs quote a little to answer that …

A driver gets to be on the PERIODIC (35 hour) DCPC system by either:

-Grandfather rights obtained by passing a car driving test before 01/01/1997, or
-Grandfather rights obtained by passing an LGV test on or before 09/09/2009, otherwise…
-Passing Initial DCPC modules 2 and 4.
