I can now finally put a car on the spec and tow a trailer after a full year of debating on b+e or c+e.
It now brings me to my next question, i sometimes get asked to do a job for a few people myself as i am self employed, but i also get asked if i could deliver their car for them on a trailer.
The part that im not sure of is… I would be using a mitsubishi challenger to tow with (Roughly 2T with everything in it ect.) And the trailer itself would weigh roughly 500-750kg and then a load of no more than 1.9T (thats what the trailer is capped at, but i would have to check what the challenger is allowed to tow.)
But either way it would put me over 3.5T with any car on the trailer, Would i need a tacho to be fitted? as most around here dont have one but reading the law it states…
If you use a smaller vehicle (eg a 4x4) for towing, you’ll only need a tachograph if its total weight is more than 3.5 tonnes. (gov.uk/tachographs/tachogra … t-vehicles)
Any help on this situation would be gratefully received!
P.S Thanks to ROG on your Tips for C+E test post and the users that submitted your diary, it really helped me along the way!
If the GVW of the towing vehicle added to the trailer plated MAM exceeds a total of 3500 kg then it needs a tacho carshowroom.com.au/newcars/2 … ger/P4D13C = GVW of 2710 kg
Dunno what trailer it is but it must have a MAM of at least 2500 kg from what you posted
That’s 2710 + 2500 = 5210 which is well over the plated limit of 3500
Licence and tacho laws go on plated weights not actual weights

Yet again the Gov site has missed out the word MAM which it should have by law
Yep you gonna need a tacho fitted…and you need to make sure you got adequate insurance for transporting vehicles on a trailer, just don’t assume that your car insurance will cover it…
Thank you both! I guess a lot of people try their luck with these things but that’s not for me, too much money and stress to get the licences never mind doing it all again!
With insurance I have already received some quotes that are pretty expensive but without using my ncd I guess they are as good as it gets.

Yes you will definetly need a tacho fitted. 4x4s / vans towing trailers commercially seem to be on DVSAs hit list at the moment. About time to!
Insurance for hire & reward use is extremely expensive unfortunately. My Isuzu D Max with 5 years no claims is £1500/year.
