Any container guys answer this please…
I have decided to go and do container work starting next week.My mate is off from the Army for a while and as I haven’t seen him for 2 years was going to take him with me.I know I can take him with me,but at which ports do I have to leave him by the gate as he isn’t allowed in,how would they know if he was “asleep” on the top bunk etc?
Thanks

So if he was by mistake always “asleep” in the bunk it should be ok and not worth him waiting outside ?

Yeah crack on. In these terrorist aware times in which we live the penalties for smuggling someone, especially someone with extensive military training, into busy, terrorists attractive, vital to these islands, transportation hubs are so slight as to not be worth consideration.
I hope this helps.
Also, random cab checks.
I’ve only had 2 in 4yrs, but it only takes 1 and you’ve got a stowaway, no idea what the penalty is, but I think I’d just leave him outside if I was you.
Freightliner, most docks and certain jobs will not allow passengers unless written to from the company in advance.
I was training a driver up in December, took him Freightliner with me, had to get boss to email them to ok it.
By your sarky attitude I will not be doing it then, did someone drop a container on your head■■?.,…,
I haven’t done containers for about 10 years, hence why I was asking, but as per some smart ■■■ has to go over the top with there answer ! Sorry for dam asking…Now Mr mod post this plz !
Thanks
Unless you go into Southampton, your job is cancelled if caught with passengers on the terminal. Security are always pulling in trucks.

Southampton is where I will be based…
I think he will be waiting in kfc/Micky D’s etc then.
Thanks

Felixstowe is one of only a handful of British ports that
have their own statutory police units. Formed in 1975,
the Port of Felixstowe police unit has authority across
the port estate and up to a mile outside the port
perimeter. There are 27 uniformed officers, including
Head of Police Chief Inspector Whitby, an Inspector
and a Station Sergeant, and they work a similar shift
pattern to that used in port operations.
Like any ‘regular’ police officers, they undertake
police training and swear allegiance to the Queen. But
beyond Her Majesty, their allegiance is undoubtedly to
the Port of Felixstowe. “We have to be unbiased — but
we are here to secure the port,” says John.
There are some very significant differences in terms of
police powers, too. “One of our main tools is that we
have special powers for stop-and-search,” says John.
“We have the right to stop and search any vehicle
leaving the premises, and to do that we don’t need
reasonable grounds. While other police must have
reasonable grounds to suspect, we can do random
stop-and-search, in order to check for stolen or
prohibited articles.”
Under the International Ship and Port Facility Security
(ISPS) Code, introduced in 2004, the port police and
security officers have the power to stop and search
vehicles, people and items entering the restricted area
of the port. Checks are intensified if the Security Level
is increased by the government.
The police liaise closely with UK Border Agency staff,
as well as local Special Branch officers and their
counterparts in the Suffolk Constabulary.
Probably not worth the risk, eh?

I’m delighted my reply has been of help to you.
Your mate, being a serving soldier, should be pretty clued up on what the possible consequences are of being arrested as a possible “stowaway”. Quite apart from the fact that the press would have a field day, he could well be in serious doo-doo with his CO.

He has no idea lol…Just told him I will be trucking the week he lands so he said he will come with me which is fine, but now will have to wait outside…
Thanks for all your replies
I work on boxes a fair bit, but certainly not full time. Been in to a number of ports, Fxto, Grain, Southampton etc. Re Felixstowe - I’ve been stopped three times by the port police and although they are chatty and pleasant and I have no gripe with them at all, I doubt they’d be impressed by a stowaway. If you haven’t a Rhides card and you’re dockside in a lorry, you’re going to have to do some very impressive talking to not get a free ride in a police car…
I wouldn’t even think about doing it TBH!
Thamesport and Felixstowe require RHIDES cards, both driver AND passengers, if you go there, you would be advised to drop your mate off at the cafe just outside the port of Felixstowe, or the cafe in the trailer park at Thamesport
Southampton will ask who the passenger is at the gatehouse as you enter the port, no passengers allowed, 2nd drivers are
most of the rail heads do not allow passengers
if you take your mate and he is ‘asleep’ on the top bunk, and you get caught, you risk being refused entry to the terminal
at Southampton, there is a KFC (i think, it’s been a while) on the roundabout at gate 20
word of warning to you and your mate though, if he goes with you and you drop him off at a cafe/KFC or the type, you can be inside the port for a few hours at a time

There’s a KFC around there, there’s also a cafe just before you go over the bridge on the right.
Most railhead / dock turn around times are in hours though, not great for your mate is it?

You don’t need a mod to post it, you have done it yourself. I don’t get why it was a sarky answer. It was meant to be light hearted, but H&S in port areas is very strict. Accidents with cranes happen quite often.
Southampton
Felixstowe
Would it have been better if we had all said, nah, you will be ok, crack on?

That looks painfull…
What makes me laugh years and years ago I was at Liverpool I think a new place had opened and we had to wear hard hats, what a hat will do if 20T falls on you I don’t know !
Advise all taken on board guys, cheers
Does your mate have a Class 1? Can’t you just say he’s a trainee and you’re showing him the ropes?
Had a serious falling out with the security at Southampton when they pulled me over at Area 1 for the 4th stop and search in 2 days!
Said he could search the vehicle all he wanted, but he wasn’t going to search me. Ended up with 5 or 6 of them trying to intimidate me, threatening me with all sorts…told them to get ■■■■■■ and if they wanted to turf me out, please hurry up so i can get parked up and have my dinner.
All because of the attitude of the prick who started it all…if he had spoke to me politely instead of talking to me like a bit of dirt, i might have been a bit more co-operative.
Took 35 minutes, 6 security people and 2 managers, but i got an apology, so they got their search.
They actually threatened to strip the lorry…i said fine, but you’ll put it back exactly how you found it.
Moral of the story…jumped up little ■■■■■ can be found manning security booths near you!

i got tugged for a search twice in less than an hour
first was when i went in area 3 to box off, when i came out, they had gone, i went into area 2 to box on and they were there, yep, got tugged again by the same 2 blokes
i simply told them that if they didn’t find anything the first time, how would they expect to find anything the second time
