Part Time Weekend Drivers

i’m just a poorly educated lorry driver, scratching a living and generally going through life life trying to bother no one,
but you having said this

Once the site is selected and the layout designed I am off.

are you openly admitting to being one of the arse holes who put a car park the size of wales in the front of rdc’s, then a pokey little space at the back for 100’s of movements a day to be performed in
or is it a case of " i design it perfect, then the owners change it afterwards"

with no particular reference to our own insider designer, but there are obviously some highly intellingent people designing these warehouses & yards.

Take, for instance, KingSpan at Holywell where EVERY marked out trailer parking bay is left (blind) sided reverse into it. You can’t turn around and reverse to the right because they are at too great an angle.

I can only think a European designer was employed and he/she overlooked the fact that we, here in England, drive from the right seat. :unamused:

Or Tewksbury cold store!!

Designed for 40’ trailers was the brief and that was the specifications it was built to.

Would be nice to have room for the units as well :unamused:

Nope. Its a case of you gets what you can.

For example over a certain size (circa 500,000 sq ft ish) there are very few sites that are free and availible at that size. Not many people want to wait for the whole design and planning process so people like ProLogis will go a speculative build or get planning permisson based on a certain design.

You can change this in a small way but cant make major changes as that would require it to go back through a long planning process that people will not wait for.

So we are really limited to set areas of hard standing, set locations for dock doors / canopies etc. Its very rare that you get a complete blank sheet of paper with very few restrictions. THe only people that do this are the larger supermarkets where they want something that is 100% customised to them, also becuase they are willing to make the capital investments in buying the building where as 95% of other warehouses are leased so you have to pay to put it back to the same state you recieved it in which can be costly if you are making structural changes.

The really intelligent people are the lucky sobs that develop them. Obscene amounts of money they make.

Also most desingers are just analysts who work in an office. Generally they have an “ops” person hodl thier hand but in some cases they dont bother which is why bling side reversing into bays gets drawn on the map as they dont know any better.

OK so after signing up with a few agencies and bring promised they were all very busy with work, [although I’d probably start on Class2, even though I’ve got my Class1…lack of experience.] when the phone finally rings, its 7.5t multidrop…the woman from the agency hasn’t got any details of how long the shift is or how many drops. I thought, don’t really want to do this, but I’ll say yes because at least it gets me some experience.

Well, it was an 8 hr shift, with about 12 drops. I had a driver’s mate with me as well, to show me the route and also help with picking etc. All fine. Only thing was it was for a catering company that supplies the restaurants of London…Milk, huge slabs of cheese, vegetables, juice bottles etc etc, none on pallets, that had to be handballed in trolleys, downstairs a lot of the time too. The guy I was with was really nice and driving the lorry was a walk in the park compared to the Class1 training I’d done, but it was very heavy work. Didn’t complain about it though…just got stuck in and we got the job done.

One thing worried me though, when I asked him about when we take our tacho breaks. He said just stick it on break everytime we stop and we’ll rack up enough. Well I did it for about 3 or 4 of the drops, and left it on other work for the rest of them. I thought its gonna look extremely wrong for it to be on break every 5 minutes. In the end the total driving time was only abour 3:45, but I got at least one half hour ‘break’ in to satisfy the WTD as it was an 8 hour shift.

My respect goes out to you guys who do this. Apparently its a daily run, but they don’t seem to get many permanent drivers to do this run…surprise surprise I thought. Luckily I can go back to my daytime job after resting up the rest of the long weekend  Question is realistically how long will I have to do work like this before I get my break into Class2 or Class1. I don’t really want to be just doing 7.5t work. The agency guy from Driver Hire promised me a Class1 assessment drive with one of his regulars, but I haven’t managed to follow him up on that because he’s away on holiday.

BTW all you guys who say ask if you’re unsure…it really works  my driver’s mate was very late, so I asked one of the other drivers where do I get my tacho from and how do you operate the fridge etc etc, and he couldn’t have been more helpful. Oh no problem I’ll give you one of my blanks…every fridge is different but this is how mine works etc etc, this guy will know, go ask him blah blah, I hope all places treat newbies like this.

I hope all places treat newbies like this.

sadly not. “here’s the keys, bye bye” is more usual.

i see our ex resident logistics consultant is at it again

by the way it’s only about the third time i’ve looked at that site - it’ll be a while before the fourth :unamused:

How can people who have worked Mon/Fri. do it without breaking tacho laws.

Easily, as long as you’re careful with the hours.

You’re also still limited to a maximum of one shift per weekend.

Equally, you could just keep schtum about your regular job. The Ministry don’t work weekends anyway.

You can tell who the engineer is and who the trucker is PMSL

And if I do get stopped for whatever reason (e.g. accident) and asked for my tachos, I give them today’s tacho and last weekend’s tacho, and tell them that I only work one or two days a week. I can imagine what their response will be…

“Pull the other one”

Especially as they can easily check it out by asking for my NI number and checking with HMRC…

i do not care who they are or what they do if they have a week day job they should be banned from driver jobs they need the brest the sane as full time driver,s and if firmen ect are so hard worked they should be to tired to drive trucks ban them i know i have made spell mistakes but i have been driving all week ect ect

i dont find this subject funny we are told by law to park up for safety and a bunch of smart alic.s jump out of the fire engine and into your truck, well i will tell you something if you are involved in an accident even if it is not your fault it will not be vossa you will worry about it will be the hse , i was at a big meeting just a while ago and this very thing was brought up they dont care how few hours you have driven they will want to know if your other job had any thing that could have an influence on your driving . if they think it did you will be for the hige jump together with the person who employed you .

Come on Fuse!!!

Everybody loves firefighters…women throw their knickers at them…yummy mummies stop in the street to make their kids wave when they really want to wave themselves…girls flash there ■■■■■ as you drive past and then there are some girls who…,err… well…    :open_mouth:
