OK so after signing up with a few agencies and bring promised they were all very busy with work, [although I’d probably start on Class2, even though I’ve got my Class1…lack of experience.] when the phone finally rings, its 7.5t multidrop…the woman from the agency hasn’t got any details of how long the shift is or how many drops. I thought, don’t really want to do this, but I’ll say yes because at least it gets me some experience.
Well, it was an 8 hr shift, with about 12 drops. I had a driver’s mate with me as well, to show me the route and also help with picking etc. All fine. Only thing was it was for a catering company that supplies the restaurants of London…Milk, huge slabs of cheese, vegetables, juice bottles etc etc, none on pallets, that had to be handballed in trolleys, downstairs a lot of the time too. The guy I was with was really nice and driving the lorry was a walk in the park compared to the Class1 training I’d done, but it was very heavy work. Didn’t complain about it though…just got stuck in and we got the job done.
One thing worried me though, when I asked him about when we take our tacho breaks. He said just stick it on break everytime we stop and we’ll rack up enough. Well I did it for about 3 or 4 of the drops, and left it on other work for the rest of them. I thought its gonna look extremely wrong for it to be on break every 5 minutes. In the end the total driving time was only abour 3:45, but I got at least one half hour ‘break’ in to satisfy the WTD as it was an 8 hour shift.
My respect goes out to you guys who do this. Apparently its a daily run, but they don’t seem to get many permanent drivers to do this run…surprise surprise I thought. Luckily I can go back to my daytime job after resting up the rest of the long weekend
Question is realistically how long will I have to do work like this before I get my break into Class2 or Class1. I don’t really want to be just doing 7.5t work. The agency guy from Driver Hire promised me a Class1 assessment drive with one of his regulars, but I haven’t managed to follow him up on that because he’s away on holiday.
BTW all you guys who say ask if you’re unsure…it really works
my driver’s mate was very late, so I asked one of the other drivers where do I get my tacho from and how do you operate the fridge etc etc, and he couldn’t have been more helpful. Oh no problem I’ll give you one of my blanks…every fridge is different but this is how mine works etc etc, this guy will know, go ask him blah blah, I hope all places treat newbies like this.
