Whats the black bit?
when fitted its between the starter and the block
not electrical
im baffled

Some starter motors are generic and are used across different ranges, they can have blanked out bits that a certain model does not require, usually its wiring around the soliniod.
I have stripped a couple of 4x4 starter motors out and found this to be the case.
cheers so far, surely a hole would just have simple blanking disc, not a fair sticky out lump?
it could be a ventilator to remove condensation
theres one on this one but personally id have put at the bottom to drain off best?..

This a shot from above, complete with coolant leak
its at the back and mid way up/down, barely visible, neither top nor bottom
This is a ‘breather’ it also lets any water ingress out and acts like a one way valve by not letting water in.
