I only do occasional nights out and prefer to use industrial estates as generally quieter. Last night I was running out of time and had to stop on a layby on the A421. I was second in layby and pulled up behind the first one. The next lorry in I noticed pulled in and then reversed to the end of the layby. Is that the norm or is that annoying. From my perspective it’s a bit annoying as it means the next one has to reverse in the gap. I would always presume you should just pull behind the others. I could be being naive though.
could be starting later or earlier, could be a bellend there are plenty about.

I would say your perspective is correct.
If it was a car/van driver they would have parked smack in the middle, so could have been worse!!!
A tad annoying but better than parking in a gap that 2 lorries could get into.
He may have been a reefer.

You wouldn’t hear the fridge if it was parked directly behind though would you.
A mate of mine when parking in a layby always reverses to the back of it so he can see what’s going on in front of him. I.e diesel thieves etc.

Sadist Bald bloke. What if some pensioner type in their Austin 7 planted themselves in the middle o’ layby■■?..
Depending on how the layby is laid out he might have reversed like that so his back wheels were right up to the edge and his overhang was behind the layby and over the ditch…if that makes sense…leaving a fairly simple and safer reverse in for the driver in front of him when the time comes, which of that is the reason he would probably help guide in.
Some of us try and help each other out, some wouldn’t have the foggiest idea what we’re talking about.

I’ll help other drivers out , but I’m not sitting around waiting to do it ,when im ready for bed im gone , he’s on his own
I’ve done the same myself tbh. Nice long off road layby, me with the worlds noisiest fridge on, two trucks already parked at the front and I reversed right to the back. Why? Simply because the two motors already there didn’t choose to have a noisy fridge behind them, but any subsequent parkers would actively choose to park near a fridge (if that makes sense?)
I’m acutely aware of others being affected by my actions and will try to cut down that effect whenever possible. Aren’t I the good Christian?
Commendable and hadn’t thought of that

That is the difference between watching somebody back in into a tight spot safely, or filming them on your phone, backing into something, and posting it smugly on you tube…
The later seems to be slowly replacing the former. I guess that’s natural progression. .

That’s what I alluded to above. A considerate reefer driver will park as far away as possible. A cut will park next to you, even if you are in the middle of an near empty services parking.
Although the concept of running out of time and having to park in a layby is foreign to me unless its a dogging layby like a few on the A421, perhaps he was saving a space for his chum, on approach the gap would look to small.
If I was stopping overnight, I’d probably park in behind the others. But I’m usually only stopping for 15 or 30 mins (I prefer to spread my breaks through the shift) so I would normally reverse up to the other end so as to keep the available space unbroken when I leave 15/30 minutes later. Does that make sense?
