For paying its drivers less than minimum wage no less.
Self employed …but only allowed to work for one employer!!!
Hows that work?

It’s been long over due that large companies who don’t treat their workers are exposed.
All I ever ask for is a fair days pay for a fair days work and abit give and take on both sides.
almost all the couriers I met when Hermes was still Parcelnet were fairly happy with their lot.
I wouldn’t have taken the job on with the middle management controlling them though, there were some real bullies among them.
I’ve worked for Hermes via agency on and off for the past 3 yrs or so…and in my opinion the practice of intimidation by managers and blame culture is plainly evident throughout the organisation.
I think this is aimed at the 1000s of people that are using their own car to do parcel deliveries a few hours a day, there has been a similar case involving uber drivers in London I think who are also fighting the same thing, they are both using there own car and paying for its total running costs and being payed per parcel and taking a financial risk in their parcel delivery “business” if Hermes/uber was supplying the vehicles and covering all the running costs they probably are employed, but they are not.
Yep this story is about the couriers doing the doorstep delivery and does not relate to LGV drivers. I always enjoyed my class 2 work with Hermes. The couriers would always have something to moan about but then I didn’t get too involved with that side of the business.
GBA pay van drivers a day rate of £50 plus night out of £30 doing Europe i think class 2 is something like £60 plus night out or bonus £40 these day rates must be below minimum wage or is there a massive loop hole to get round paying minimum wage
Do Hermes actually check the car couriers have business insurance for doing this sort of delivery?

Doubt it as most of the drivers work for a master sub contractor who answers to Hermes also takes a cut of the money city sprint is one such firm

Business insurance would not cover them for parcel deliveries they would need ‘hire & reward’ to be legal and for piece of mind ‘public liability’ as well. Business use cover the likes of plumber electricians etc for when being used for going to and fro from a job and carrying tools etc. Hardly any insurance companies will provide cover for a car and if they did you can kiss goodbye to over 2 grand a year just for that alone.
Please let it be the recruitment agencies who are targeted next.

I think the recent events at Sports Direct will hopefully have more effect on agencies, as the agencies are generally not paying below minimum wage, but rather employing people on basically long term Zero Hours contracts. They claim it allows employees flexibility, but the opposite is actually true, as if you don’t jump when told, work will be taken away and you don’t have a single leg to limp on!
I had a delivery the other day via Hermese as the driver turned to leave I called him back and gave him £1. He was surprised to say the least.

Compulsory terms and conditions for each assignment to be emailed in a standard format covering EVERYTHING would solve a lot of the problems I face with agencies.
I should not have to ask for written confirmation it must be compulsory.
I have agencies ring me up offering work… they describe the job etc… I then ask what’s the rate of pay and the rec consultant laughs as if it’s a taboo subject, gives me the rate but rarely offers minimum shift period or overtime rate and threshold… I have to press for this information. Absolutely ridiculous.
blue state, I know things may have changed since I worked there (7 years) but the couriers didn’t work for a master courier then , or if they did it was only a minority. They did have a system called “super agents” which may be what you are referring to.

Yes, I don’t get it at all it just seems be be a load of naive whingers who don’t understand by using their own car to deliver parcels they’ve gone into the parcel delivery business.
If I don’t make minimum wage on a return load I just have to ■■■■ it up as I doubt the government is going to be saying that they or whoever I took the load for are going to have to make it up to minimum wage.
Same thing for them moaning they had one day off sick and lost the route. If I had a driver off sick and couldn’t send a truck, or a replacement to a customer, I wouldn’t be surprised to find they’d dropped us for someone else.
