Parallel Lines*

Tell me…did the political landscape surrounding Brexit remain the same from the start of the campaign to the present day?

I didn`t foresee the present position.
In 2016 I guessed we might have 20% chance of negotiating a better deal out the EU than in it. Seemed a bad bet to me.
I now reckon we have less than 10% chance of such.

You work from the assumption that we had a good deal…what was your measure?

Perhaps we just accord principles different values?

But for you there is no concept of that.
Your measure is clearly the only correct one.

Such a shame that a majority disagreed with you…a majority who clearly aren’t as far sighted and enlightened as you.

Parallel lines in a leisure activity I used to partake in my wilder earlier life.

Monkey241:
Or have politicians made statements that changed according to prevailing conditions?

The EU politicians said in 2016 they didnt think the UK would be better off in than out. Unchanged. Leave was perfectly happy to push the £350m rebate line. Until the day after the vote. Thats a change.
Davis etc, “no downside…” Oct 2016 , changed to “never said it would be easy” Sep 2017, and throwing his toys out the pram in July 2018.
Thats a change of message, without any noticable change of context. The EU didnt change it`s position at all.

Is that it?

The EU said?

As for the 350 rebate line… what exactly are you on about?

The bus or the weekly cost?

We had a deal. Asking how good it was is asking the wrong question, IMHO.
I could see downsides to the existing deal, of course I could. I could also see upsides.
I worked from the assumption that moving to make a change should give a good chance of improvement.
I saw a very slim chance of an improvement, and a big chance of a worse deal. Seemed to me a bad move to take that risk.

We can each give different weightings to different aspects of life, I agree.

Is my measure and my opinion the only correct one?
Clearly not. I read and listen to those of others, and do respect such… but see no reason to argue for them.

“Such a shame that a majority disagreed with you…a majority who clearly aren’t as far sighted and enlightened as you.”
Is that recompense for my alleged condescension?

I’ve just looked…

Again at the album cover and I can see a connection with what you are alluding to.

Never occured to me at all over all these years that it’s another meaning for the LP title.

I had a similar wild early life.

this thread will soon be appearing at a bullys near you

Not so much recompense as an illustration that there’s always someone better…

Sorry…much of your last response blurred into insignificance- but did you babble something about other views and respect?

Was that where the fricking dragons and unicorns came in?

We can surely agree today that the £350m was “inaccurate”?
Leave campaigners were very happy to push that figure until after the vote, when they suddenly disowned it. No circumstantial change, except the vote being over.

The EU said we wouldnt get a better deal by leaving, they didnt change. Davis and others changed their rhetoric, although circumstances hadnt changed.

Monkey241:
Tell me…did the political landscape surrounding Brexit remain the same from the start of the campaign to the present day?

Of course changes have happened, but the Brexit promised is not being delivered because of any recent changes.
It is not being delivered beacuse it was always a “wish list” rather than a plan.

It’s a while since I had to engage on the 350 million topic.

What in your view was ‘inaccurate’?

Or is it the supposed ‘promise’ you take issue with?

"Claim
After leaving the EU, we will take back control of roughly £350 million per week.

Conclusion
This is wrong, it’s more like £250 million a week. In any case the impact on the economy from changes to trade after leaving the EU is likely to be far bigger than savings from the UK’s membership fee.

The UK Statistics Authority has criticised Boris Johnson for “a clear misuse of official statistics”."

If you wish to engage on the accuracy, try arguing with David Norgrove.

Check out the poster…“Let`s give the our NHS the £350m the EU takes every week”
“Take back control of huge sums of money”

Hmmm…selective quoting doesnt cut it…

The 350 million is the amount budgeted…the only room for discussion is whether the total is higher or lower in any given year, due to the way the rebate is credited.

As for the bus- do you struggle with definitive statements? They tend not to start with ‘lets’

Sent from my SM-N960F using Tapatalk

But tell me…wasn’t the NHS recently gifted even more money?

To me throwing cash at a system desperately in need of a rethink is foolish…nonetheless its what they’ve done.

You think the head of the ONS is guilty of selective quoting?
.
Or me?
Links are provided so you can follow the sources.
We have NEVER paid £350m a week to the EU.
.
And you are guilty of choosing one word from one statement.
Selective or what?

Money for the NHS is a “gift”?
Peculiar choice of words? Trying to imply what?
It’s not a present for doing nowt.

You have an issue with the terminology now? Yes-gifted. Extra funding is a boon.
How quaint.

As for never paying 350 million… thanks to Maggie and the rebate.

The fact is the budget is calculated in advance and the rebate in arrears.

The fact is albeit a paper exercise… that money is indeed the bill

As for selective…

Kinda key to disproving what idiots commonly refer to as a promise.

Its odd that these idiots dislike precise use of language…it knocks a large and rather obvious hole in their misrepresentations.

We can say misrepresentation…or we can call it what it is: a lie.

Yes. Thatcher obtained that rebate. Good for her. Good for us.
So, we have NEVER paid it.

A car is advertised for £350 a month rental. You haggle the dealer down to £250 a month.
A year later you return the car, and stop so the payments. Do you now have £350 extra a month to spend?

.
Yes, I do have a problem your terminology. Funding an essential service is not through gifts!
Such an essential service of which we demand much needs to be funded properly, not through “gifts”.
The “extra funding” is necessary to pay for the extra load the NHS has had. Still not enough for what they need however.
And when I say the NHS needs it, I mean so they can provide the service we expect.
.
And so far you have shown no sources to support that £350 claim, neither full nor selective. Well, easy to see why.
You have still not said what circumstances changed from 2016 until now to explain the changed stance and altered targets of Brexit.

The “let`s” came after the definitive statement “we send the EU £350m a week”
It is irrelevant to the amount claimed to be sent.
