I can not think of an answer to this one because it is as bad if you come to a stop in the outside lane as I did, nightmare. It sounds daft but maybe a roof mounted beacon if you have time to stick it on .Big fine for running out of fuel …just do not know

4 lanes in one direction, suddenly someone has a bump, all 4 lanes come to a grinding halt… how do the emergency services now get to the scene… 4 lanes of standing traffic impeding their progress to the scene of the problem. They’ll travel contra down the now closed motorway.
About how long would it take to authorise that? Not a big issue for vehicle recovery, but when a motorway is blocked with no hard shoulder for ambulances?
With CCTV and a patrol checking from the opposite carriageway, once the way has been confirmed sterile, the access will granted straight afterwards.

Thanks for answering, but how long would that take?
I know we don’t live in an ideal world etc, and idiots will abuse hard shoulders to queue jump, but a ‘proper’ m-way with a H-S will allow the blue lights through much quicker, won’t it?
.
Has anyone done the 7 hrs dcpc smart motorway module yet?

As soon as the incident is confirmed, every man and his dog will be making progress towards scene to get it resolved ASAP. I work a “proper” motorway with hard shoulder, I’ve lost count of the amount of times H/S is blocked through impatient people while I’ve been heading to incidents.

Guess I am asking “how long is a piece of string”! Just trying to see if it is true to think the HS does provide quicker emergency access.

Yeah I did it yesterday (Tuesday) there’s 4 hours of my life I won’t be getting back. That RAC fella looked very uncomfortable sat there saying nothing.
as said you get impatient people trying to queue jump using the hard shoulder. But what about broken down vehicles with our weather getting hotter in the summer you seem to see more and more cars on the side of the road with their bonnets up.
I have an interest in classic cars and have one myself and whilst I make sure it is up to the journey to the best of my ability stationary traffic after a motorway run is an issue due to the fan being engine driven. Whilst I try my best to avoid this by taking detours etc I have been caught out before now and spent a tense 20 mins on the hard shoulder praying no emergency vehicle was going to come along.

This used to be my concern years ago, I recall opening all windows and putting the heater on full boost for extra cooling when stuck in summer traffic and watching the temperature climb. Bro-in-law had an MGB a few years ago, he fitted an electric fan, a Kenlowe I think.

A lot of the time it does afford quicker access to the incident, but you do get occasions when broken down vehicles and impatient people block the hard shoulder.
