Never had any trouble with the 4-series, but I find the steps on the FHs and TGAs are awkward and I’ve slipped down them on many an occasion. The FHs step edges themselves seem to be quite recessed from actual side of the truck which I think is what causes the problem.
No slips or trips for ages and then bang. Now dont ask me how i managed it ,from the drivers seat in my 4 series r cab to the ground in one go :: head first:: ouch. Now being a healthy Scot with passion for all things deep fryed washed down with large amounts of anything alcoholic you can imagine I landed with a bit of a thud but even I was surprised when nerd from Glasgow uni arrived saying somebody had reported an earth tremor in the area.
Anyway, all back to normal now , a can of iron brew (driving today) and a mars bar are all the medicine needed. cheers…
I have the same problem with the MAN TGA I drive, as I keep looking for a step (usually the middle one) that for some reason is never there till I end up on my a*** or worse still trying to find a door handle that is way to bloody high to get hold of till you are virtually in the cab
Not long ago I stopped in a side rd in Norton and went to get out of the cab and thought the sloping grass verge was just level with the cab floor till I turned round and did a cartwheel hanging on to the door then bouncing on my left shoulder with an almighty crack and jesus did it send me dizzy for a couple of minutes or so
i have missed the steps on my merc 817 a few times or slipped on the top step as its plastic and when wet is slippery…I must get a pic sometime soon of my girlfriend getting in or out of my truck and its even better watching her get in my van.
Not exactly falling out of the cab but…
After spending a night out in Tenby outside Jewsons last year I woke about 6.30, got up, opened the n/s curtain at the back a little and put the kettle on. After it had cooled I went to close the curtain but as I was pulling on the tensioner the ■■■■ thing slipped, and so did I, straight into a sodding bramble bush sideways on!
Was ever so slightly painful that one…
Luckily there was no one about to see me!

Ok then…I was sat in my cab with my coat on and i keep my car keys (which is quite a big bunch) in my right hand pocket of said coat.
now anyone that drives a Daf cf (new shape) will know that the left hand grab rail (as you enter the truck) is quite close in height and proximity to the drivers seat.
So im sat there with my coat on but unzipped so the sides of my coat are hanging down either side of my lap,
Now sometimes (i dont know why) i exit vehicle by going forwards out the door heel on step and away, as opposed to turning around and exiting in the proper manner. As i did on this occasion, But the problem was as i got off the seat - the seat lifts (as do all air ride seats) trapping my pocketed keys between the seat and the grab rail…
I go flying out the cab and i am swung round and left hanging sideways in mid air clinging to the outside of my cab doing my best “MISSION IMPOSSIBLE” impersination … Tom cruise woulda been proud

MAN TGA…doing defects one night in a bit of a rush i rushed(a kind of run?) upto the cab and vaulted into the cab using one step and the hand rail.
at which point i cut my head open on the open tacho draw which was opened about 3/4 of the way.
i get a phonecall the next morning…can you take the unit down to the tacho man as the draw is in the passenger footwell…we don’t know how that happened.
oh dear those tacho’s are dear…

Done that in an XF too. Those tacho draws above the windscreen are deadly. I feel your pain.
Had a chuckle at most of the answers here!! Can identify with most!
I’m always falling out of my Volvo FH. It’s a daily occurrence at best!
I liked the design of the steps on my previous motor - a 4 Series Topline. The steps on that were ‘layered’. The Scania was more like climbing stairs, whereas the Volvo is like climbing a ladder.
The arrangements on my old MAN TGA and M-B Actros were also too ‘vertical’. I was always bashing my shins on the bottom of the door frame on the Merc in particular.
Ere “Flying Fenman” it reads like you were the one who was “Layered” or should it be “Horizontal” when trying to enter / exit the cab
Might it have something to do with consuming extra large amounts of the proverbial “fall over juice”
I’ve twice fell out my wagon when I’ve been kipping (no bunk) and my right foot has gone numb. I’ve woken up, jumped straight out and landed in a heap. Embarassing but quite funny really.
I’ve also fell off the ladder of my tipper once and landed in a big soft bush. It didn’t hurt but it took me ages to find my way out!

Could well be NEJ!
When I worked for Van den Bosch, I took my FM into Eindhoven for some warranty work, it needed parts so rather than stay in Holland for the weekend they gave me a couple of repositions to do with another truck.
I had to take an FH Gobstopper to Marlbrook and swap it for another for service. I was also taking a Nestle walking floor trailer to Liverpool docks to go to Ireland. Now I wasnt allowed in Cadburys with a Nestle trailer behind a Cadbury liveried truck so had to drop the trailer outside in a layby.
I pulled up at the gatehouse and fell out missing the bottom step that my FM doesnt have The gateman saw this truck parked there and waited, eventually he came to have a look and found me laying in a puddle of water and blood. Are you ok mate?, Yes,Im fine I always get out of the cab like this
I swapped trucks and trailers & drove to liverpool with headache and this great egg on my head like a cartoon character. Who needs health and safety when an extra step can make you look like a fool?
When I first passed my class 2 I had been driving for 2 years in a 7.5 Merc Atego, i had a bad habit of jumping out and sliding down the wheel arch.
My first week in Rigids i automatically swung the door open went to slide down a wheel arch (which wasnt there) on a Volvo and fell about six feet and landed on my arse!
Luckily only security had seen it on camera, but it went round the company quite quick!
