hi, just like to know who has there own website out there my other half is starting to build her own site and i was wondering if you’s could give her some tips.i.e. whats the best things to put in or how to get things to add to her site.anything that can help would be most helpful.
It depends how she wants it to work kk, is it for business or contact or just to do it for fun.
Once you set up all your templates each new page keeps the same format if that is what you want.
if you use raw html it is a bit more difficult. Microsoft Frontpage makes a very basic website which works well.
The best package is Macromedia with Dreamweaver, fireworks etc, it is difficult to learn but is brilliant to use.
Ive just done all my City & Guilds stuff and part of the exam is finding free of copyright images and making moving graphics.
I feel a lot more satisfied if I make the graphics up myself and animate them, but you can get most stuff from Google, click on the second tab “images” and type in a search keyword
As said it depends on what she want to achieve with the site.
A basic HTML web site is not to difficult to do, but to get a professional web-site you might need to look into dynamic database driven pages using ASP or PHP, also adding bits of Javascript for menus and maybe Cascading style sheets to control page formatting.
There are packages available for web design. Dreamweaver is great, but expensive and because complex. Other cheaper version are availible. Most have the letters WYSWYG which mean “what you see is what you get” this means instead of having to write the code you just build the page visually and it writes the code for you. These are good for most sites, Hot Metal Pro is one such package. Also useful is a good graphics package to make pictures more interesting etc. Photoshop is the industry standard, but again expensive and complex, Paint shop pro is very good and you can get some trial versions of software and advice from computing mags. I think there was one on building basic sites or maybe the best way to start is evening classes.
Microsoft Word can also be used to produce some very good web pages, many pro web designers use it as the standard. Just make up the page as you want it to be in the same way you construct a letter and then use the “Save as” function but save it as HTML. Just remember to upload any graphics you use to the webserver.
Buy a book or see many of the tutorials on the net about writing HTML and CSS, its very easy to learn and you can write pages in Notepad.
Muckles suggested software such as Dreamweaver, you’ll learn HTML quicker than learning how to use this application. And forget MS Word or MS Frontpage… WYSIWYG Editors are useless because they render inflated “code”.
Stay away from JavaScript, ASP, PHP or Perl until you have some understanding of HTML.
Don’t use dark backgrounds, flashing text, or animated pictures because they’re annoying and look amateurish. Use a “colour wheel” to find complimentary colours. There are free website templates available on the net.
Don’t “centre” everything on your page and try to use “tables” instead of “frames” if the site is for commercial use.
The best value image editor on the market is Paint Shop Pro. Current version is 8.1 but previous version 7.04 is much easier to use. There is a free image editor called “Gimp” and is quite good. Adobe Photoshop is the industry standard and costs around £300, the learning curve to use it is almost vertical.
Don’t go to the expense of buying FTP software as you can upload files onto the internet in Windows Explorer.
I aint got one of my own Jim, but heres a few I built using Frontpage. Its a decent and fairly cheap programme. If you decide to use it, make sure that whatever host you use has got frontpage extensions, it makes it a peice of cake then. http://www.tackeroo.com
I’ve got my own but you ain’t going to see it because I’d lose my anonymity !
All of these have been made using Macromedia HomeSite 5.5, EmEditor 4.0 (probably the best replacement for “notepad” - use it for CSS, PHP and Perl), Adobe Photoshop CS (8.0), and Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7.04 (sometimes version 8.1).
There are some great sites you did there Brummie!
Now then, that aught to be sufficient creeping for you to divulge your site URL! go on now, go on tell us!
