Own Unit ?

I think merc was doing a euro6 big space 2545 for £430 per week, no idea what the deposit is thou,

NewLad:
You’d need a minimum of £2000 a week just to cover the costs I’d say.

Fuel is going to be around £700

2,000 miles per week at best at a rate of around £1.25 per mile of which around £1,500 will go in fuel costs is a reasonable starting point to sort out some figures.

I do over 2000miles a week id say 75% fully loaded and use about 700/800 ltrs a week.

Look on the owner forum theres lots of info there. Doing ferry trailers or boxes as a subby your looking 1-30 1-40 pee mile.
With a sensibly priced truck you could make a living but is it better than been an employee is debatable.
realy the only way to make real good money is to work directly for the main customer or in aspecalist field but doung that from scratch is easier said than done.

SHYTOT:
£600 per shift days & nights 5 days = £6000 per week £300,000 per year sounds achieveable

Maybe in Cloudcuckooland, but reality is a bit different.
Save yourself some time and a few years grief and flush your money down the khazi now, or look for an investment with less cut throat competition, fewer restrictive regulations, and a bigger margin between layout and income with a bigger mark up. :bulb:

why does everybody want to buy a truck …all I wanted was to own a whorehouse…

Make the unit a ■■■■■ house

Would it be better to own your own unit or hire 1 ?

One of the main problems is the business culture in this country, some fuel companies want paid at the end of the week, repair agents will in some instances want paid before they release your vehicle.

This is fair enough but the companies that subbie you will point blank refuse to pay you before 60 days !

These companies have the ability to pay you right away but refuse, its as if they are hoping you go under before they are due.

Within that 60 days, on top of fuel, trailer hire, insurance etc, you might have a puntcure, that could be £400, your clutch could go, there’s another £1200.

This doesn’t include getting stuck behind an accident and missing a slot at an RDC therefore costing you £200 and having to wait 3 hours to get tipped causing you to run out of time and having to call your next collection to say you cant make your 4pm collection.
The supplier will say thats not a problem, we have another subbie sitting here who can take it,
Your next 12 hours work has just gone down the drain.

It takes big balls and lots of cash just to get through the first 60 days.

And you cant be ill ever !

I take my hat off to anyone that tries it

Just spoke to another friend who owns his own unit and he says you need 10k behind you just for fuel etc :open_mouth:

Just a question.
Don’t you have to have a certain amount of cash in the bank to show before you start on your own■■?

Yes, without checking it’s around 12500.00, in reality they are expecting to see 25k plus.
How you show this depends on status, limited or sole trader.

You do before you can get an operators licence and also tell them where the vehicle will be kept.

What about just having a unit to show and shine only ?

You need to keep a minimum of £7,400 for the first vehicle, and £4,100 for each subsequent vehicle in the bank, or have an overdraft for that amount, or some similar arrangement, at all times. VOSA will want to see your second month’s bank statements (ie after you have had to pay for nine week’s operating costs but before you have been paid in most cases) so you really need £20,000 to start off with.

I aim to earn £1,400 a week after diesel, There’s a living in it, but certainly no fortune. Some weeks I will have nothing else to pay out, but in the last week for example I have spent £1,200 on tyres, £800 for the annual service and £500 for three month’s advance yard rental, so I probably lost over £1,500.

I enjoy running my own truck for all the aggravation, but I always say that if you have a good job with reasonable pay and a good boss then you’d be better off sticking with that.
