Owens Road Services cuts 10% of staff

Welsh haulier Owens Road Services has laid off 10% of its staff, one of many hauliers making tough choices as a result of the recession.

A source close to the Llanelli-based company said it had initially tried slow-working, but, with no sign of an end of the downturn, it had no choice but to reduce staff numbers.

He stressed that the company was not in trouble, but added: “When you have £70,000 lorries parked up with no work, you have to look for cost reductions somewhere.
“The company had to cut the monthly wage bill in order to survive.”

The source said there had been a lot more lay-offs in the industry than was known, and that Owens - which operates around 200 trucks - was simply being more open than others about the situation most hauliers have been experiencing.

“There are a lot more hauliers making decisions like that, and sending leased trucks back,” he said.

“It is the same all over the UK — not just in south Wales.”

I would think with the announcement from Corus today concerning Llanwern, there will be a lot of haulage jobs going, also with many more firms in trouble its looking very grim.
