Overtaking Hearses

I think I’m going to put in my will that I want my hearse to go for it  . And I don’t just mean keep to the speed limit, I want them to the get the tail-kicking out and all that. :exclamation:

You should’ve seen the hearse that passed me on the M1 just before last Christmas. I was doing 70 & it came past me like I was going backwards!

i wanna go out in style sideways :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing:

Yesterday, at the same point as my original post, 2 of us were passing the A40 Cogges sliproad when a hearse pulled out in good time with the usual black limo behind plus 2 or 3 normal cars; Unable to move over due to overtaking traffic, my mate infront nearly hit 2 cars following these as the drivers of these never bothered to check what was coming, just blindly tailgating the rest. I know there are some who say everything in the cortege should be given way but on a busy dual carriageway? The hearse driver was on the ball and must’ve seen what happened as he drove up towards Oxford doing at least 50 not the usual snail pace…

I have been flashed in by a “loaded hearse” right outside the Nescliffe services on the A5 … Although i have no credible witnesses i can tell you that i was on the phone to coffeeholic at the time and i think i said "Jesus Christ Neil " bad choice of words i feel …

I always respect the deceased and there friends and family, i will overtake if i can pass the lot in 1 go. You just use your common sense.

He did.

‘…common sense…’

No offence is intended, but this needs opening up a bit.

To paraphrase what they told us at the time, ‘…common sense…’ is a commodity that Blair & Brown despatched into history when telling us that diversity is a fantastic asset for the nation to embrace and that anyone objecting to it is old fashioned & both socially and racially bigoted, etc.

As such, be assured that ‘…common sense…’ no longer exists and now only, with respect, belongs to either:

a). Those using what is now a meaningless term.
b). The deluded and/or those harking for what’s been voted away.

Why so? Because diversity is the reality of what the Labour Government has puked over us.

I’m not making this blather up since it’s what the nation clearly wanted because (in it’s tribal blindness/deafness/stupidity?) it’s what it voted for

Just to add my two bobs worth-

It was my dads funeral a couple of days ago and he was an ex-lorry driver who hated getting held up behind funerals. When we were arranging his funeral, the undertaker asked if we had any special instructions and we told him not to go slow-none of the walking in front of the hearse stuff, just get in and keep with the flow of traffic and don`t cause any hold ups!

Some people may not agree with this but I know its what my dad would have wanted and thats enough for us!

That and we played Monty Pythons “Always look on the bright side” as the mourners were leaving the crematorium!!

Made everybody laugh-which was the whole point as he a warped sense of humour like me!! :smiling_imp:

Am i the only one that know right from wrong? No offence but most of you are talking crap  You do what you know to be right even if its not popular or old fashioned :unamused:

With the greatest respect Mr Knowitall, surely the whole point of this is that you do what you believe to be right? You say you know right from wrong and you do what you know to be right but I think most will agree its a matter of personal opinion. I don’t know of any specific law regarding hearses, so if you know whats right and wrong, perhaps you would care to enlighten the rest of us crap talkers?

As I understand it there is no exception in the Highway code for hearses, in fact a funeral director can be prosecuted if necessary for holding up traffic.

Or am I talking crap?

I will treat any funeral procession with respect out of compassion for the living rather than respect for the dead.

I will certainly overtake a funeral cortège but only if I believe I can do so without disrupting the cortège in any way.

A loaded hearse on it’s own that’s not part of a funeral cortège is just another commercial vehicle on the road as far as I’m concerned.

Sorry about your Dad, last year we went to a good mates funeral and he was mad on motorbikes, he had just just come back from the TT when he died. As we left the Crematorium, they played George Formby singing “Riding in the TT races”

Everyone walked out of that service with a smile on their face, to me met by another friend on his Shuttleworth Special

It may not be against the law? Its more a respect thing with me i do overtake when it is safe to do so but not at high speed. Btw im not a religous person but i do try and show respect even if that is an outdated view :unamused:

Well it is slightly offensive to generically diss an entire forum without detailing specifics - but here are four facts about “knowing stuff” to be going on with:

  1. A driver is likely to know what they know. (That’s ok then,eh!)
  2. Likewise, a driver may have an idea about what they don’t know (Hmm, that’s promising if they’re inquisitive & wanna learn more).

However - and these potentially add negative aspects to our lives:

  1. A person might not be so switched-on of what they don’t know regarding what they supposedly ‘…know…’
  2. Just as loads of people are utterly clueless about what they don’t know. (ie, gobbing off about stuff like “common sense” or “everyone knows that blah”, etc :frowning: ).

Hey-presto, ‘knowing stuff’ suddenly becomes a murky pond of worms.

Thanks Happy Keith. This may well be the first one of your posts that I’ve understood

Mr Knowitall still hasn’t really answered my question. What is it that you KNOW to be right that the rest of us don’t? Everybody here has voiced an opinion which they are entitled to do and regardless of that, every funeral procession is different so in some cases you would be able to overtake safely and some you wouldn’t.

I live not far from a cemetery/crematorium which is within one of the local driving test centre test routes. On one of his practice routes with his instructor, my pal was following a funeral car at about 10 miles an hour. His instructor said, “Do you know the deceased? No? Well then get a move on, overtake a slow moving vehicle when safe to do so.”

You can have respect for deceased without having to sit behind them at 10mph :unamused:

I think this the only time the police would nick you for overtaking a hearse, yet they turned a blind eye to pedestrians stood on the hard shoulder.

It’s all very well saying don’t interrupt the cortege but the other day half the cortege just pushed out onto the dc without a thought they might push someone through the barrier…

The only rule I’ve come across is that in Cardiff a vehicle cannot run between the hearse and lead mourner’s limo. Funeral started in Barry (different county) with my late uncle’s Harley riding behind the hearse, but when we got into Cardiff, the rider had to drop back behind the limo.
Was bloody good hearing all 20 bikes revving out of the cemetery though - the way Ianto would have wanted…

Apart from military funerals, why else would the police need to ■■■■■■ a hearse? I’ve seen them near Oxford and the coffin’s had no flag or uniform cap on it…
