Okay, so over t’water you have overtaking bans. All fair and well, BUT what happens when there’s a big long queue to get off at a certain junction and you want to carry on along the road you’re on
Do you have to sit in the queue until you are able to get past without going in to the banned lane or are you permitted in such circumstances to use the banned lane
Same question applies for when you get stuck behind a 100 tonne crane or tractor for example.
You can move into the left lane to get past a queue of vehicles taking an exit. You can also move over to allow vehicles to join as well, I’ve even been flashed out by police cars in those circumstances so no problem.
You don’t get many tractors on the Autobahn but on the national roads with the bans there is often a sign saying the ban doesn’t apply when overtaking farm type vehicles.
As far as the 100 ton crane goes that would depend on the speed it was doing.
Doesn’t happen very often Rob, we’re not talking British drivers here. Also remember that a right hand drive truck means you are sitting in the ideal position to ‘suggest’ it may be better if they let you back in.
Rob As i uderstand it you are allowed to overtake, but you have got to giveway to oncoming traffic, and you must pass at a reasonable speed otherwise if somebody drove out of the queue and it came to a collision you would be partly to blame.
In no overtaking areas you are allowed to overtake vehs driving slower than 25kph
And for the “[zb]” you have got to brake and pull in behind him

He means on national, non motorway, roads Rob, where you are more likely to encounter a tractor than on the Autobahn. Having said that you will hear at least two or three reports/warnings a day about Falschfahrers on the Autobahn.
Falschfahrer = driver heading the wrong way on the motorway.
Coffeholic,it is vorbidden to change lanes on German Autobahns to let other vehs in although in my 26 years here i have never heard anybody getting “done” for it
I’ve never heard anybody get done for it either Geoff and I’ve done it in front of police cars and even had them let me out to do it so it doesn’t seem to be enforced at all.
Wheel Nut:
except in france where they are not allowed on the motorway at all So wide loads have to go through all the small villages
And what is even more strange is that all the Peage barriers on the motorways have an extra wide lane for wide loads, the same wide loads that aren’t allowed to use the motorways so won’t be passing through the Peage barriers anyway.
REFERENCE no overtakeing there are few and far exceptions for GERMANY
and sorry if the signs say no overtakeing then it is not allowed to move out
Coffeholic and also when overtakeing the new law says you must be doing 10km more per hour than the vehicle you overtake, and the fines
have got increased with points and this goes for non-german licence–
holders as well, so please take care as the german police are going to town
with this and catching quite a few drivers out,
Also on many autobahns (plural?) where there isnt an out and out overtaking ban.
There is often a minimum speed limit for each lane effectively banning slow trucks creeping past, if you cant maintain 60 km for instance in the centre lane, you shouldnt be there.
The big difference is that they have thought about the congestion caused, so the bans are sometimes enforced in extra heavy traffic, or at times stated on the signs.
