I’ve only been driving cat c for 7 weeks. Have been in a manual, but last week drove a (slightly) newer (58) auto. I used the engine brake (stalk) and the system changed down before the brake started operating. The tacho reacted (twice) by showing an overspeed. Seems it revs the nuts off doing this. Is there likely to be some feedback?
(Agency, first job, so obviously green… )

that’s nothing to do with the brakes your just too fast … it will fly into the revs as that’s where the exhaust brake works best but
you’ll prob get a ball aching for over revving try using the big peddle that stops the truck for a bit then use the foot exhaust break
To get an overspeed you must exceed the limit set by the limiter for 1 minute. This is done by coasting downhill without slowing down. If the engine brake won’t hold you back don’t fear, there’s a pedal on the floor that can help

Nothing to do with coasting…

Will an auto really allow itself to over-rev?

I’m sorry I said coasting instead of rolling Mr Pedantic. I’ll never do it again.

Well it’s an offence to coast didn’t you know
Tell that to Mercedes, my Actros jumps into neutral all the time.
My speedo and tachograph don’t read the same. (Tachograph reads higher). Limiter set by the speedo which causes overspeed warnings. I just lift off before my minute is up!

It’s not what the limiter is set at. It’s set in the tacho. I’ve driven lorries limited to 85kmh and the overspeed only lights up over 90kmh for the minute.

Why would anything be said about over reving when using the exhaust brake?

Because a lot of company’s want you to drive keeping all revs in the green band.

When using the throttle not when using exhaust brake.

A lot of places don’t have the monitoring systems set up properly so it will just register anything out of the green. A bit like some company’s don’t set up their tachograph software

Same here- bloody Eco Roll. At least the Merc gives a few seconds heads up time on the dash display before the tacho flashes for overspeed.
