I won’t bore you with Overspeed, you either know what I’m talking about or you don’t. Digital tacho users will be well aware of this issue so I apologise for discriminating against the paper-tacho brigade.
Now before the Holier Than Thou delegation all chant “It is the driver’s responsibility to keep to the speed limit, blah, blah, zzzzzzzzz”, who ever thought that a driver having to repeatedly press a button on the tacho is a good thing and that it somehow improves safety?
When you are going down a steep hill (think M62 Ainleys to Brighouse or M74 at Happendon). It’s enough of a job keeping the vehicle below 60mph, without the thing bleeping and flashing at you — again and again.
Am I the only one who thinks this feature is a dangerous distraction?
I took part in the consultation on digital tachos. We had to answer around 40 multiple choice questions. There was never any mention of this nonsense.
i totally agree.
we should all put a wire on. then we won’t have any more overspeeds.
digital tachos would be really good if they were designed correctly.
totally agree with you dazza, the speed limit for an hgv on a motorway is 60mph,not whatever the tacho deems to be faster than the set speed(in my case i was being warned about an overspeed doing anything above 53mph cos my set speed was 52).another case of regulations being implemented around the law.trouble is,i"ve heard of quite a few drivers being prosecuted for overspeeds recently.
The bloody dash lights up as well on a merc, first you get the orange lights and then if you keep on going over the limiter speed it goes red.
I dont think it is a dangerous distraction just bloody annoying, I know I am going over 56mph I don’t need everything to flash and light up to tell me
in the UK, a driver can not be prosecuted from the speed trace of a tachograph alone.
the speed trace may only be used as secondary evidence. not primary. so it will be the same with a digital tacho.
when you get stopped but the wheel tappers and there have a look at you over speed if the over speed is a long time there will question why you were travelling at that speed i think if the over speed is read say 100 kph and that speed was maintained for more then 10 mins than you could be in trouble cos it may be a sign that the speed limiter is not working.
If it’s safe and just illegal then no-one is going to get hurt, fine - just the possibility of the driver getting prosecuted - as long as the driver does not complain if that happens…
I can’t figure out how this overspeed things works. When ours where limited at about 55mph, then when you went over 55mph for whatever the timescale is then it flashed ‘overspeed’. This i understood. Now ours are limited to 50mph, i still need to go over 55mph for it to register an overspeed ?

The speed limiter and Taco are seperate items, the truck dealer sets the speed limiter, the overspeed setting is something for a taco center to set if at all possible.

On a similar note, what’s with all this 50/52 running, ridiculous and dangerous
The DAF LF 7.5t but upgraded to 12t had on the taillift “this vehicle is limited to 50mph”
We used to get away with murder with these little DAF;s. They looked liked 7.5 tonners but were 12,and they could do a quite reasonable 56mph. Oh yes they could.
