Just registered, all good stuff. Wondering if anyone out there has any idea…the faintest incling as to how I might get involved with volunteer driving HGV or other with any of the aid/humanitarian relief agencies or charities?
The obvious routes have fallen somewhat short of direct inroads or contacts…
I looked into it once; the main NGOs will use local transport companies to transport aid (they know the roads, the country, experience etc) also the money it costs goes to the local transport companies ie it could be damaging to their businesses to undercut them with free foreign labour; and also adds to employment GDP etc. Also less chance of any embarrasing incidents ie volunteer drivers getting killed.
Some charities seem to run their own vehicles, as far as I could find at the time you neede a lot of money and had to supply the vehicle and the cargo as well as your self. You would probably do more good writing a cheque for oxfam, or even better train in medecine, then you would be an asset to a developing country.
Cheers for the postings, great to know there’s life out there.
MrF has been in touch already, looking into Hope and Aid direct at the moment…a good framework with which to add to. Nice one.
I’m lucky as i’ve no ties and work agency! Well, Lucky is a relative term.
