Over or round?!?!

Been having a discussion with a mate for a route im about to do and thought I’d cone in here and get some opinion from you lot. I’m loading oilseed ■■■■ at wymondham just off the A11 near Norwich to go back up to Hull.

The route the sat nav brings up is A11-A47-A17-A15-M180-A15 and over the Humber bridge. However, if I opt to avoid the Humber bridge the route takes me A17-A1-M18 and then M62 into Hull. The A1 way is 33 miles further round and 30 minutes longer than going through Lincoln and over the bridge.

In your opinion are you better off paying £12 to go the shortest route over the bridge or going 33 miles further round knowing you’ll get better fuel consumption and be on the limiter pretty much all the way?!?

Discuss!

Went over the Humber bridge earlier this year and it was about £23 for an artic

All the prices dropped in april. It is now £12 over 7.5t regardless of axles touching the floor

Personally I’d probably be tempted to go round the A1 M18 but I’m not really that familiar with the roads in that area and I don’t pay for the fuel ec’t so …

I’ve no idea what the charges were before April but according to this it’s now £12 for vehicles over 7.5 tonne.

It doesn’t say about extra charges for trailers but if anyone wants to check here are some contact details:

I would avoid the A15, it may be 33m shorter but not cheaper

I would say A17-A1-M62 would be the cheapest route.

I’m guessing that its bulk work and you’ll probably be on the button at 44t in which case all that stop start up through lincolnshire will knock your fuel consumption right back. Getting to the decent roads as soon as gives you half a chance of getting the best MPG and to be honest you will never match the SatNav timing going through lincolnshire so the half hour saving in journey time won’t even be realised.

If it was purely £12 to save 33 miles and 30 minutes running then bridge every time but factor in the real world and I reckon you be quids in on the theoretically longer route.

Cheers

It’s touch and go and if the bridge was free I would probably go that way but for me I think it would be the long way round.

A15 ■■■■■, narrow road, stuck behind a 40 mph man…

…or a 35mph man! Got stuck behind a turners wagon on the 17 doing 35mph then speeding upto 45 and back down to 35 etc etc. no signalling on r/bouts or anything. What kind of numpties do they employ?!

I went up the A15 in the end as I was close to needing a 45 min break if j went the longer way. Thanks for your input.

Bit late I know, but I would have gone down the A11, picked up the A14 to Huntingdon, then up to Hull on the A1, M62. Much better roads, less traffic (on average), higher speeds and better fuel economy. Plus every time I ever used the A47, it was crap !
We used to run Alconbury to Cantley, and it was far quicker going A14, A11, A47 than going A1 to peterborough then across the A47 all the way.

Going via Huntingdon and the A14 is 67 miles further than going over the bridge and 34 miles further than going A47-A17-A1. There’s no way you would save money by going that way rather than over the bridge. I averaged 6.9mpg going A47 and over the bridge and I can only see it being 7.5 via Huntingdon. Each to their own I suppose.

I went over in an 18t a few months ago and it was £4

Dont know about saving money  , but I would have thought it would be just as quick time wise, even though it is longer mileage wise, but its easier driving. :sunglasses:
