Over 'driving' hours - now what? - traffic on M8/M9

Hi all,

Today I got stuck in really bad traffic heading to Livingston on the M8, by the time I actually managed to stop my ‘driving’ hours were 5hr 23mins.

What am I meant to do? Take printouts and write on the back and hand one in to work when I get back?

First time I’ve come close to the 4.5 and totally went over it.

Cheers.

When you get to a safe stopping place, take two printouts. Write the explanation on the backs of both of them and sign them. Hand one in to the office and keep the other one with you for 28 days (just in case you get stopped) then bin it. Strictly speaking the printout and written explanation should be done straight away.

The only thing you can do is to do a print out. Your tacho will probably show lots of 1 minutes driving split up by lots of 1-2 minutes other work and is clearly not an attempt to exploit so I don’t imagine you’ll have a lot to worry about.

Hand the one in at the same time your card is downloaded, that way there’s a slim chance it will actually be recorded properly when your card is analysed

It is not a problem. The DVSA are more concerned with intentional fraud and forgery which carry prison sentences.
For driving over hours is accepted and the law allows for the safety of the load and other road users to find suitable parking after unforseen circumstances beyond your control.

as has been said print and no worry i went an hour over once as death on m6 and got diverted through red route in bham in a 16:5 trailer had no choice but to find somewhere it took an hour as i say, you can only do what the law says and stop when safe to do so even if it takes 6hrs bud dont worry

Didn’t know they did 16’5 trailers

You wouldn’t want to get a bounce on going under a bridge would you?
Think 15’7" about the highest I’ve ever pulled - had to brush the snow off the roof before leaving the yard… in May.

I did a night for SIMS in Stockport, and the trailer was 16’ 6’'. I was told to stick to the route they gave me, and under no circumstances was I to change it unless the road was closed.

Nigel Rice had one for Palletways. Lots of arse nipping going under some of the older bridges on the M1 on the way down to Fradley Park.

Do not bin your copy until at least 6 months time in case of any come back

I thought motorway bridges where 16ft 6 don’t believe the trailer is actually 16ft6

Or 28 days…

That’s why you hand in one copy - or are you suggesting that users of analogue tachos should also keep copies of the last 6 months’ charts “just in case”?

I think they are now - and they were all supposed to be anyway. But it wasn’t so many years ago that some of the M1 bridges were found to be underheight after several rounds of resurfacing etc.

Who mentioned motorways?

Do you think nothing ‘overheight’ travels on our roads?

well rob do ya homework, comet ring a bell 16:3-5 is usual just so you dont make an arse of yourself, motorway bridges are 16:6 so thats a massive 1inch gap just so you know

I keep a copy of a printout of any infringement stapled in my diary for as long as it takes to vanish from my digi card. This may be 9 months or so.

Cheers for the advice.

I’ll keep my copy in a pocket in my work bag. Will probably empty that when I get a new one so will be a long time!
