Our own worst enemies

For the last five years I have done some or all of a local companies season as self employed. Now the said company are fair and nice people but it needs to up its rate. There is more than just driving and not everyone could do it. They asked me today to do the season and I politely said I would love to but it needs to be at a better rate. And that sadly I cannot do it at last year’s rate. I then text my mate who also covers it a bit and told him to stand firm. He doesn’t and it all falls down.

Just curious but what else is involved apart from driving and why could some not do it?

We basically are left to do the complete job from loading with various farm machinery and moving the machinery from site to site. All they do is tell us where and then they don’t have to think again until it’s cleared

I think that’s called “competitive tendering” in some circles.

Some may view businesses colluding to fix rates, in a limited market in a dim light?

I’m sure you’d never do anything at all dodgy, but some things look differently depending on where you’re standing, don’t they?

No it’s called trying to get a wage commensurate with the job carried out.

I misunderstood maybe?
I thought you were a self employed contractor?
If you’re an employee trying to up rates by collective bargaining, I apologise.

Last man standing then…you negotiate for yourself, but you would need to keep your trap shut if you are successful…I`ve yet to meet a driver who could / can :unamused:

That has always been the situation and it will remain so.

Kidnap your mates wife and kids. I wouldn’t put up with that. He’s laughing at you… laughing.

don’t do the kidnap thing, he might be glad of it and you would have to fund them yourself,

I dont know what exactlyis involved but surely loading would be paid at the same rate as driving? Im self employed amongst many employed mainly paid per load drivers and whatever ‘extra’ work involved whether at the yard using the forklift (paid at the std paid by the hour drivers rates) or out hand balling off anything up to 12t of agg is always paid at the same rates…
