Hi bigal, I remember O&B Transport, They had quite a lot of motors, The did a lot out of Thos Hedleys (Proctor & Gamble) They used to run a night trunk to Manchester, Plus they did Pet Foods from Melton Mowbray, Castrol at Stanlow, I recall some of their drivers, Dickie Bolam, Matty Carter, Jimmy Ruff, Jimmy Miller, Jacky Bowman, Tommy Ions,Tommy Dimick, Larry Bamford, Joe Henderson, Joe Macallister ,Sid Dunn , Old Jonny Brewster was a AEC Expert plus they had quite a lot, I remember some of the Regs, JCN 44, KCN 18,LCN 51,MCN 48,NCN 94 & 95,The also ran Thames Traders S type Bedfords Dodges Foden, Maudsley, All ridgids then they moved onto AEC Artics, Then they just seemed to vanish, Theres a photo somewhere on this thread of a old AEC 8 Wheeler with Fred Hillier their traffic manager standing next to it, IIRC Their first depot was at the top of Byker Bank then they moved to Hawks Rd & Capstaff had It before moving to the TVTE, Regards Larry…
an aec expert he certainly was larry, i remember when ken got married, jonny went to the wedding, but went away straight afterwards saying, i cannot stop for the reception etc, because i have to put some pistons in an AEC,and apparently that is what he did,i think he came from gloucestershire or somewhere down that way , he had a strange squeaky voice, but ken his son spoke pure geordie, big al.

Hi bigal, Can you remember his old London Taxi,Ken used to drive him around in it, He also put a diesel engine into an old Daimler IIRC, He was also good with Gardners he re-bored a 180 for a cousin of mine in the earley 80s, I think he used to look after the Venture Bus Co,s Fleet to, Regards Larry.
i actuall saw the daimler standing in his garage in back railway street around 1960, i seem to remember that he also put a diesel engine in an armstrong siddely saphire, don,t know if it was his or customers, big al.
There you go Larry, found it on Old North East haulage thread.
From what Harry Pick (ex-AEC Service Engineer) told me that AEC Mammoth Major in the photo had been re-engined with a Gardner 6LW, the lorry was a pre-WW2 Mk.2 Mammoth Major with a twin stick gearbox. O & B soldiered on until the early 1990s running a few AEC Marshals which by then were the best part of 20 years old. They also had a couple of Mandator artics. I recall seeing one of their Marshals (K Reg) in Trafford Park in about 1990 shortly before they finished and I did write a feature about them for the AEC Society’s Gazette, but I no longer have a copy or the information I was told back then. I remember that they had an office / clearing house in Salford when the company was at its peak size. I was also told that when they closed down there were several AEC Marshals parked in their depot. Much of my information came from a lady member of the family, but I’m trying to remember 25 years ago.

the last time i spoke to ken brewster was 20+years ago at the car sales, he told me that he had nothing to do with the previus haulage side of things, and was only interested in repairs, anybodys, so long as it was on truck,s,i don,t know when jonny died, but i think ken has also passed over,he said that the only one connected with the old haulage business was a mrs orrell from huddersfield, big al.

I knew Tommy Orrell quite well he was a real nice bloke as was old Jonny, I used to get return loads of dog food from Pet Foods Ltd at Melton Mowbray in the 60s, They also stored a lot of it on Hawks Road Depot, Tommy was a regular attender at the RHA Meetings when their office was above Barratts shoe shop on Northumberland St, In Newcastle Regards Larry…
