Opinions on a trailer tyre

gggary:
There is no chord visible, the tear is between casing and retread. I refused to take it and had it changed by onsite fitter who complained loudly. This is for a large company with safety culture, I have pulled much worse in the past doing general haulage on building sites. Why take the chance of losing the tread. Cheers gary

Quite right. The fact you can pull it apart with pliers is surely reason enough to suspect that the integrity of the casing has been compromised. Just because you can’t see the cords doesn’t mean they’re not exposed to water ingress. They are, as you know, made of steel. We all know what happens to steel when exposed to water. That is without mentioning the effect water ingress has on rubber, ever had a pair of boots with a split sole? The rubber doesn’t last very long does it? There is also the possibility of secondary foreign object damage, a sharp stone entering that split will have a similar effect to a grain of sand in an oyster’s ringpiece, except the only pearl you’ll find is the one in the pants of the guy behind you when it blows.

Is it worth the risk in the modern H&S paranoia culture? Worth the worry of a pull or a blowout, possible death on the hard shoulder? Of course not. It’s not even your money.

You did the right thing.
