Operators Licence

Driven a Scania today which I suspect was a hire vehicle. The reason for that is that there was no operators licence in the windscreen, just a valid tax disc.

Is it an offence to take an HGV Vehicle out on the road without the OP licence, hired or not ?

No it’s not an offense, in fact i’ve had various units for the last 5 days with no tax or O licence displayed. It does seem strange having a naked windscreen.

I believe if you plan to have a truck for over a month you need to get it put n your o’'licence, less than that and its okay. Of course this is provided you have an O’licence and enough spare capacity to allow for extra vehicles.

Yes, true, although in any event an Operators Licence offence would be a problem for the operator and not for the driver.

Its not an offence at all as regards to the O licence- depending on when the VED was due and if it had been applied for there maybe a case for failure to display- but that’s the vehicle registered keepers problem (note not the owner) and certainly not an employed drivers

Operators discs like tax discs is a paperwork exercise that can’t keep up with real time any more. You may well find the vehicle has been put on using the online VOSA self-service but, as said you’ve got 28 days grace any way.

In terms of checks, from a self-interest angle, drivers really need to focus on primarily road safety and particularly issues that are endorsable with points on their own licence like tyres.

This time of year companies will be hiring or borrowing anything they can, from demonstrators to rental units just until it goes dead in January.

Part of our daily check is all discs,VE and Operators Licence disc.
Normally no problem, but occasionally with a hired in or new unit the disc hasn’t turned up yet,BUT,it could be in the TO and no one has got round to putting it in the truck yet.
