My trailer carries a JCB tele handler and to get it off I obviously have to operate the electric ramps on the trailer. Some of my colleagues think that operating the ramps without the engine running will shorten the battery life. The ramp pump runs off the truck batteries. I normally turn my engine off during deliveries. Am I doing the batteries damage?

No. It’s the same as operating a tail lift. You wouldn’t normally do that with the engine on. Obviously prolonged use will kill the battery but just loading and unloading a few times will be fine.
