Am I being thick ?
My place had planning consent for industrial use and the use as operating centre for one vehicle (no weight limit).
When I applied for my ‘O’ licence I applied singular vehicle, which it states
I have bought a 2nd vehicle & I’m looking at a 3rd later this year,
Our place has lots of parking etc as it used to be a teasroom with a car/coach park for 65 permission still in place.
Question
Do I just need to fill in GV80 or do I need to go back to the TC for an increased allowance.
Do I need to fulfil GV79 ie advertising etc
Do I need to get planning consent as the original consent was approved by district council in 1995
Can I park new vehicle on site in the meantime (not use it), my guidance notes say NO
Is £560 + VAt about right for a collect/delivery B’ham to Devon for a steel tipping body & sub, ram & crane, 3 parts, approx. 6 tonnes no loading facilities, It’s 173 miles.
Now I feel thick, but I’m sure you can and will just make me feel better and give me the answers I need.
Can you not use the online self service to apply to increase the number of vehicles. You will still need to repeat the steps although you already have one.
yes, you will need to advertise the fact that there will be more vehicles parking there, in just the same way that you had to advertise when you first applied
As far as I understand it if you are authorised for one vehicle on your o/l then you should only be operating one vehicle. If you have already bought a second then you should have applied to increase your margin before you did so. I only got my licence in Feb last year so maybe things have been slightly different in the past. I want to increase my authorisation from 1 vehicle to 2. The yard owner of where I park told me that if I would be able to get another truck without having to apply. I was sceptical about this as I did not remember this from the transport manager cpc so I phoned the operator licensing contact centre (0300 123 9000). The women on the end of the phone categorically said you must not possess any vehicle greater than the number authorised on your operators licence.
You will need form ‘gv81 - variations to a goods vehicle operator’s license’. You will have to advertise again, the form is included in form gv81 as well as financial standing etc, letter for parking authorisation. I’m going to be filling it in today as I want to up my margin as well.
I considered applying for and extra 2 but my operating centre is in London where parking is at a premium and the yard owner will charge for the number of spaces that is on the o/p licence regardless of whether you have bought a truck or not. I don’t want to have to pay for a parking space I’m not using but it would be useful to have the scope to hire an extra motor if I needed to.
The delivery price seems about right seeing as it is going to have to be delivered with a crane lorry. I could do it a little cheaper though drop me a pm for details.
Cheers for the replies,
I new I shouldn’t have bought the 2nd truck without upping my licence, it was an absolute steel as they guy has stopped trading, he has tax & vat to pay I paid him just the amount he needed we agreed I can leave it there for a month so 10th Feb, I can if push comes to shove park it down the road at another transport company.
I couldn’t figure out the advertising bit and if council planning is required.
I only got my O licence in the summer of 2013, I must have slept through that bit on the cpc course.
Cheers Fatbeerboy the guy who quoted me parks in the yard where the tipper body was bought from, I think if I don’t use him I might be asking for trouble, thanks for the offer, I just wanted to make sure it was reasonable.

Its always a good idea to have a margin on your operators licence to acquire additional vehicles, if the need arises.
Yes, I don’t want to seem “holier than thou” but I applied for a three-vehicle licence at the outset even though I only intended to run one vehicle at first but needed the margin in case I ever got the opportunity to expand. I haven’t had that chance yet but I still think I made the right decision and my advice to anybody applying for an Operator’s Licence is to get as many vehicles on it as you can from the start to save having to go through all of the palaver and expense a year or two down the line.
I seemed to get serious grief about my maintenance program, it was unofficially mentioned that if I changed my app to singular it would be an easier decision, so I changed, I had planned a 2nd vehicle roughly June this year, then the long term plan was to purchase a muck truck with grab, but I came across some kit that I thought was worth a punt.
I may as well go for 5 on my licence then, how long will this take ? I’m hoping 4 weeks.
Any idea how much a Thompson steel 15 cube body with subframe and underbelly ram along with a Ellison 125l classic crane no bucket, both 12-18 months old is worth, I’ve paid for it so I can’t change my mind now.

You have to have the right amount of financial standing for extra vehicles, otherwise you won’t be granted a variation on your licence.
Standard national and international licence applicants will be required to demonstrate £7400 for the first vehicle and £4100 for each additional vehicle they request to be authorised. Existing operators making variation applications will be required to demonstrate financial standing for the existing and additional fleet authority against the new levels.
Any applicant or licence holder appearing at public inquiry before a traffic commissioner after 1 January 2014, where additional evidence of financial standing is requested, will be required to satisfy the new levels.
