Looks like there was a distinct lack of them on the Dover Seaways bridge too
Looks like he saw those clouds and said “zb this!”
So the rudder was at 30 degrees so it obviously wasn’t working properly so if he’d done his walk-round checks he would have found that out beforehand…

- Wonder how they could see the rudder(s)given they’re below the water line looking st that photo?
- If the rudder did move to starboard then that’s probably why he it the breakwater… not sure why it was too late before they got there?

I was wondering why they weren’t trying to make the gap by using a bit of port rudder, but from the looks of the wake they were too flat to the wall, almost as if they were going parallel to it, or at least at a very sharp angle. I think they might have been trying to “go round again”, something like a military parade-ground when your practice march-past wasn’t good enough! The reporter may have actually asked the question of the crew to get the info about the rudder…
You generally look at the top of the rudder (rudder-post) to see if it’s moving as well and as much as it should when doing maintenance/pre-flight checks… You can normally use a handraulic (as opposed to hydraulic) system to pump it round in an emergency, but it takes an awfully long time and you only come back to midships and use engines for steering from there…
He was distracted by that flying saucer.

that was after he hit the wall lol
I would have thought the rudder position was indicated on the bridge. Could be steering gear failure, or maybe they went hard over to correct the course of the ship■■?
Kind of suprising there’s no tug back up when berthing in high winds etc. Maybe would have helped prevent this…
