One red faced driver

Rail services in and out of Plymouth were disrupted after a lorry became stuck under a bridge.

The Palmer and Harvey vehicle was wedged beneath the bridge on Ashford Hill in the Mutley area of the city.

Devon and Cornwall Police was called to the scene and Network Rail said train services were delayed as it had to impose a 20mph speed restriction.

The lorry was eventually pulled free and the road reopened. An investigation has begun into the incident.

A Network Rail spokesman said the lorry was 2ft (0.6m) higher than the bridge.

A rail engineer has been sent to assess any structural damage to the bridge and rail passengers have been told to expect a short delay.

An initial attempt to free the lorry by deflating its tyres was not successful.

Palmer and Huntley said it was “investigating the incident fully”.

“We apologise to anyone affected,” it added.

The lorry driver has not commented.

And there is NO WAY that truck is 2’ taller than the bridge hole. If it was, the reefer unit would have hit first. As the reefer got through and the roof only caught as the front started to climb, it’s maybe 6" taller than the marked height, if that.

“The lorry driver has not commented”. I bet he commented all right as he did it, and I expect it was unprintable!

I would think the drive said somethink like this

sorry did not see the bridge as I was on the phone booking appointment with specsaves   :stuck_out_tongue:

Certainly not two foot as the thing would be smashed to bits. You can see its quite a steep hill I’d agree it was the hill that caused the truck to get wedged as its risen up sharply.
I remember seeing a bridge somewhere that gave the bridge height but said for vehicles less than a certain length for this reason.
