Couple of mates had PPLs. One did a flight into Compton Abbas, with an instructor on board. He hadnt long qualified and it was his first time into that field. Told story in pub that evening: Grass was wet and probably needed cutting, too. Dragged a lot on the takeoff roll, and little Grumman Cheetah didnt want unstick. He just made the takeoff ok, but apparently the instructor was whooping! When they got back to Eastleigh they picked twigs out of the landing gear.
He finished telling his story laughing, but then went very quiet and pale, as it all sank in.
