One for the ADR experts.

My mate was following a foriegn truck the other day, which had a police vehicle following behind, this was from gretna were he joined the M6 and was still behind them on the A1M at Leeming Bar were he passed both vehicles, were he noticed the truck had ADR plates showing, the vehicle was also showing explosive stickers with 1.1d on them, is it normal for an ■■■■■■ for that type of load?
The vehicle was not displaying any UN numbers.

When I did IBC’s of fertilizer in the Summer/Autumn last year I was warned I could be randomly followed by the police as they had all details of shipments for that particular company.

So it wouldn’t surprise me that they would do it for explosives.

Hi weeto,

No, it’s not normal for an ■■■■■■ for this type of load, but maybe the transport company or the shipper asked for advice from the police and it depended on what exactly the load was.

The “1.1” means that the whole load (regardless of quantity) would all go ‘bang’ at the same time.
(Rather than one at a time, in which case the placards would be 1.2)

ADR says that the “D” means that it’s a

Secondary detonating explosive substance or black powder or article containing a secondary detonating explosive substance, in each case without means of initiation and without a propelling charge, or article containing a primary explosive substance and having two or more effective protective features.

Hi Neil,

That wouldn’t surprise me either.

Don’t know what country the trucks were from but I know the Yanks do a lot of training near Stranraer so perhaps it could have been one of theirs coming off the A75 heading somewhere. I’m probably way off the mark though.
