Oldest rig in regular use?

There’s an L reg Volvo F88 pulling logs around Warwickshire. I’ve seen that A reg Volvo flatbed up and down the A34. Moodies of Mapledurham were running a Y reg 8wheeled Leyland Constructor log wagon, not seen it about for a while though.
Of course the showmen love old wagons, one near me runs a V reg Foden (1979).

Bob Carmichael’s F88 is arguably the oldest, can’t remember the exact year, but the trailer he has behind it is even older than the unit.
There was a late 60s Ford D Series still running down in Penzance but I believe it’s now gone into retirement?

A R Newport out of Crowlas, next to Dennis Oates yard ?
He ran real old gear.

Our current 7.5tonner is about to be pentioned off (51 plate) but the previous one, an R reg is still in use by a tree surgeon, and the one before that (a B reg) was being used almost daily by a landscape gardener until last year.
I’m out today on our 6w 02 plate and the boss wont sell it. Not worth much to sell on and too good for scrapping so it gets used as and when needed. If it goes wrong there are plenty of places chopping up Daf CFs to keep it going for a while longer.

J barrett haulage in oldham have a few old erfs i passed one the other day think it was on an e reg. had an old volvo f10 behind me the other day up near hartshead services, was a proper old one with the round headlights, loaded up with bales of hay. Would love to have a go in one instead of some of the 900k scanias we have!

A local builder still uses an E reg Ford Cargo tipper 7.5tonner. I think it’s a one owner vehicle too, must be hard to get spares for? Another around here was still using an E reg Leyland Roadrunner until recently.

Saw an old Volvo F616 flatbed this week, on the M40 IIRC. “A” reg so about 1984, very faded khaki green, came from Tamworth according to what was left of the signwriting on the cab. Either the rear springs were knackered or the load was over the nearside rear axle cos it’d got a serious list on it, but still plodding along!

Normally carries those fake chimneys you see on Grand Design style houses. Gets around Oxford quite a bit.

It was a pleasant surprise to see it actually; those old F6’s were a much nicer cab than the FL6 which seemed even more cramped than a Bedford TK, specially if you were unfortunate enough to have to sleep in one.

Have to admit though; not only was it the oldest truck I’ve seen in general haulage for a long time but also the scruffiest!

Further to oldest rigs BTW; Carter’s Steam Fair has been on tour this month, I’ve seen their Atki and ERF A-series on the road a couple of times. They must be about the last of the showmen to use pre-1970’s trucks.

Didn’t get the reg but spotted on Wednesday.a ford cargo 4x2 artic pulling a step frame flat loaded with straw/hay.think the name said j&r riley. Looked really clean. Cheers Darren

Im sure I read somewhere that this truck has got a slightly more modern Volvo engine fitted to it than what you would think. Something like an early FH engine in it. I might be imagining it and talking crap though.[/quote]
You are not talking crap. It was in Trucking magazine about a year and a half ago and its had a new engine and a new gearbox IIRC. I think the braking system has been modernised slightly too.

Just Seen this in the yard at Silentnight Barnnoldswick.
Looks pretty old?
Not sure if it counts as a “Rig” though…
Aren’t T&D looking for old DAFs?

It not the oldest here but probably the oldest working yank in the UK she had new paint since this picture was taken she is now red with the same markings tho 1978 Kenworth W900 CAT 425 13speed eaton-fuller pulls like a train runs like the wind at 1650rpm returns about eight n arf mpg at 40t and a bit noisy but comfortable

8.5 is pretty impressive!

Ours is one of the oldest tippers around here.

A BIT NOISY…is that something to do with that pair of stacks right next to the side windows . :grimacing: :grimacing:

Pleasantly surprised twice today; coming out of Carmarthen along the A48, saw a very clean Volvo F10 of 1980 vintage, pulling a flatbed with a 40’ box on it; then saw it again on my way back running empty. Light blue, with “Lawson” on the headboard so probably the same outfit as commer 70’s pic on another page, but definitely a different truck.

Only downside was I was driving both times so didn’t get chance to grab a pic of it. Certainly the oldest working lorry I’ve seen on general haulage for some years, and a real credit to its owner.

This old girl turns up at our place fairly regularly.

Saw an A reg Volvo (I’d guess a 17ton MGW) flat bed with fake chimneys on last week somewhere up Warwick way.
