Oldest revenue earning HGVs

Revenue earning in a sense, I saw a fantastic circus fleet last night on the A1M. They were blue, and said “Fantasia” on the side. There were a few Bedford TMs (when was the last time you saw one of those?), a Scammel Crusader I think, a couple of early Foden Alphas, an ERF EC, and a couple of old interesting Renault vans (a Traffic, and a K50).

Also, I think the next copy of Commercial Motor is featuring an article about that old F88 retiring soon.

This was heading out on the Western Avenue yesterday morning, still taxed till next May so not planning to take it off the road yet it seems.

That old F88 often seen on M40 pulling logs I think beats anything! Often makes me laugh when pics pop up on Facebook any loads say they’d prefer that over a new truck. 90% would last an hour before they realise they’d made a mistake. 10% wouldn’t need 10 minutes. Fashionable to bash modern lorries but get into a oldie, even one from 15/20 years ago and you’ll realise we’ve never had it so good.

I was doing Spain most weeks with an 18 year old 164 not long ago, would still take it over the current 12 year old R series, which I would take over anything newer.

Built to last, 4 series Scanias were the best trucks ever made.

This old girl still working, tipping at Aston yesterday

My two contenders

This old girl still working, tipping at Aston yesterday

Registered in Ross Shire, probably supplied via Baillie Bros at Elgin.
They sold a lot of high powered Fodens.
I’m not sure, but think that one may have been new to an A. Campbell.

David Cameron has had this lorry from new. It was off the road for a few years, but was overhauled and is back working in recent years.
It has a 3406 Caterpillar engine.

You don’t see many with a split windscreen these days .

shame to hear the F88 is about to retire.wonder what will become of it?

I read the article last night. His o-licence runs out next year, and he’ll be 75 years old. I think he’s looking to sell it.

I doubt it too. Apparently it’s a bit of a Trigger’s broom, having had several cabs and engines over its life. Bob Carmichael said it takes a lot to keep it on the road, but has become something of a hobby maintaining it. It’s a really good article. I recommend buying this week’s copy and reading all about it.

thanks…i’ll purchase a copy

Can’t say I’ve really read this thread but how does a 1982 lorry rate?
Sorry the photo doesn’t show very much, but all I could do driving with the phone in a holder, when I got alongside it looked like an old railway carriage to me.
