Ange I think Larry has got a crush on you! :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:    Well he is doing a lot of buttering you up.    Now on the subject of drink, I do not touch a drop of it,   and it never makes me lose weight. :astonished: :astonished: :astonished: but if I cut my portions of food, I went from over 15 stones to 14-6.

Have cut out the alcohol for now & watching what I eat with a lot of excise

But if can lose the weight at the next Geordie Gathering might just wear the leathers although does depend when it is

Will have to have a pic of you in those leathers Ang.Get all of these drooling :open_mouth:  .
Cheers Dave.

Better still Dave :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: get a photo without the leathers,   then we would see all these old drivers burning up the keys to get on this thread!   :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

Well now if you look closley you will see a starting handle it appears to be fastened up to the top rather than the side, I drove an old Scammell which had a leather strap to hook onto the starting handle, Reg JVK 44. for Baxters Road Services on the Quayside in 1957, the old Scammell was a 1944 Reg & still working pulling loads off the docks into Baxters Warehouse,s On Pandon Bank sometimes up to 14 Ton a time, mind you just a short haul, but the old Scammell never let me down, hard graft in those old days but Old Jonnie Baxter was a fair man & paid good money, Regards Larry.

Well now ive said all that about starting handles, Ive just openened a litre bottle ot Glenlarrymorangie, Its the last of my stock from Tescos offers, so Im on the lookout for any reduced Malts that are about, So think of of old Larry in his old age & let me know of any such bargains, thank you Larry.

Sorry but off the drink so not looking

Oh come on Ange, you could allways pass the bargains on to me, Regards Larry.

A very nice looking modern wagon Dave. First Foden I drove must have been a bit older, it had a starting handle to get the old Gardner running.
My trailer mate was a girl, her dad owned the fair I drove for.

T.M.

I expect there is a slot for a starting handle on that one TM.A lot of newer lorries like Bedford TKโ€™s still had a starting handle as a back up on the early ones.
Cheers Dave.

You right there Dave, I saw the strapped up handle later, it was the modern looking bumper that threw me, plus nostalgia creeping in.
I did about three weeks for a fairground when I was fed up fixing old machinery and steam engines in the mills. I soon went back when I realized what a crap job working on the fair was, sleeping in the box behind the cab for starters.
I had two trailers behind the Foden, one was the waltzer and the one tagged on behind that was a generator. The bossโ€™s daughter rode shotgun and made the grub on an old primus stove when we were on the move. The old boss told me that if I even looked longingly at his daughter the starting handle would be inserted up my โ– โ– โ– โ– , more politely of course.

The modern looking bumper is the type Foden fitted to the later S 18 model, ?. Regards Larry.

No whisky or leather responses on this thread,so here is a lorry pic as an interlude.

I will ask John ( Jet ) Morgan he drove it from new for B & J Davies of Bucknell,Shropshire.
Cheers Dave.

those old dg fodens took some starting , the older ones {up to 1947 } had a decompressor lever halfway up the radiator so that you could swing them on your own and then drop the lever . the other way was to get it at top dead centre and two men could โ– โ– โ– โ– โ– โ–  it using a length of rope . the apprentices got that job first thing where i worked , it certainly got the blood flowing in winter , in more ways than one if you caught your hand on the radiator grille , cheers , dave

We did the two men on the rope to start the Foden but first start of the day we used the โ€œoily rag on fire in the air cleanerโ€ method as well.

After seeing Larryโ€™s bird in the photo,   I thought to myself, :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:      Larry might be feeling the pinch! :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: for he has changed from his top class malt to " Grouse",   if that is the bird  He would need his old artic to take the size of bottle home!

A nice place to be posted to Larry. The Vulcan Squadrons from RAF Scampton used to go up to Lossiemouth on detachment/excercise in the 60s and we used to fly up and spend a few days there doing nowt. The base next door,Kinloss,is out of commision now I believe.

Chris

When those Vulcan Bombers used to fly over here after dark in the 60โ€™s and turn their afterburner on they used to shake the house and rattle the window frames :open_mouth:
