It is a little-known fact that “Dolly Blue” was not made at Backbarrow factories ,- which were on both sides of the old A 590.
I am sure the blue bags
were merely packaged there, but Dennis will put us right. I can not remember who the in/out hauliers were , but , again Dennis will know.
The buildings interiors were blue,…the workers were coloured blue,…the road crossed between the doorways was blue,…and
when there was a delay in crossing because of the continuous traffic,…the air was also blue
.
Cheers , cattle wagon man.

Laundry bluing is made of a very fine blue iron powder suspended in water (a “colloidal suspension”).
Blue colorings have been added to rinse water for centuries, first in the form of powder blue or smalt, or using small lumps of indigo and starch, called stone blue. After the invention of synthetic ultramarine and Prussian blue it was manufactured by many companies, including Mrs. Stewart’s Bluing in the USA, Reckitt’s Crown Blue in Hull and the Lancashire Ultramarine Company’s Dolly Blue at Backbarrow (later purchased by Reckitt & Sons).[1] It was popular until the mid-20th century in the UK and USA, and is still widely used in India and Pakistan. In many places, it has been replaced by bleach for its primary purpose.
Bluing is usually sold in liquid form, but it may also be a solid. Solid bluing is sometimes used by hoodoo doctors to provide the blue color needed for “mojo hands” without having to use the toxic compound copper sulfate. Bluing was also used by some Native American Tribes to mark their arrows showing tribe ownership.

I visited the Lakeland Motor Museum at Backbarrow last summer. The Museum stands close to the old Dolly Blue buildings.
In addition to the wonderful collection of old cars and car-related exhibits, are well-documented scripts and photographs depicting the former Dolly Blue Works" and its purpose. When I was reading the history of the Reckitt company , it stated that the
product was merely packaged at Backbarrow. This was stated by a former Reckitt
s employee , who is still alive to confirm .
Between typing the earlier and this , I have contacted the L.M.M., and they have confirmed my earlier statement to be correct.
I have not looked-up Wikipedia`s claim .
We all await Dennis ( or Leyland 680 ) to supply the correct answer.

I remember The Dolly Blue works at Backbarrow, the main A 590 road to Barrow ran by it,all the buildings had a blue tinge ! The old Backbarrow iron works was right next door to the dolly blue factory and Athersmiths had the work out of both sites until they both eventually closed.I used to deliver bagged barytes powder into the Blue works from London occaisionally in 1969 when I was running my first motor.I re-call one bank holiday week, possibly easter time, when I was only doing one round trip to London so I banged on everything I could in London which was about 10 ton,but Watts asked me if I could load 4 ton of this barytes as well that was urgent. So as it was heavy stuff and didn’t take up much room I squeezed it on.So I “trunked it” up very steadily through the night and I can recall pulling onto the Dolly blue weighbridge with the D1000 and grossing 20 ton,the bloke in the office said “■■■■■■■ hell son where have you come from?” London I says ! “well you want locking up!”
I pulled back on the Bridge after tipping and weighed out legal at 16tons and carried on to Barrow with the rest of my drops!Do you know that the run up from London never bothered the D1000 one bit,I could tell it was well loaded by the way it handled but I just went canny,no probs, and a good payload to boot,Happy days
Bewick.

Just off to ■■■■■■■ to see if any of the corner shops has a dolly blue bag tucked
away under the counter, my Mam swore they was the best remedy for all insect
stings, well you never know Ang might just get stung before the next “do” and me
being a former boy scout likes to be prepared.
thanks harry, long retired.
