I would sooner smell the diesel than ■■■ smoke Dave.Thats one thing I didn’t like and that was driving a smokers lorry if he was on holiday or off work.
Cheers Dave.
i’ve been smoking since i was 13 dave , but i was always careful to keep a window open and cleaned the cab regularly , in fact one non smoking driver on holiday relief couldn’t tell it was a smoker’s lorry . i’m down to ten a week now though as the heart surgeon says there’s only one alternative to stopping and he doesn’t recommend it . cheers , dave
If you can manage on ten a week Dave, that’s not far away from packing them in.My late mother smoked, but I nor my two sisters haven’t smoked and none of my nephews or nieces either. One of my brother-in-laws used to smoke, but he’s the biggest anti smoker of the lot now.He used to own a newsagent/tobacconist shop.
Cheers Dave.
Well I must admit I smoked years ago in the 50/60s, Of course thats when I could get hand rolling backey very easey when tipping in the docks in London, But anyway I packed it in a very long time ago, But I styill enjoy a King Edward Cigar, but only the duty free ones, they are not easey to come by now, my daughter spends a lot of time abroad & has difficultey getting them for me, But Im not bothered because I prefer my single MALTS anyway, Regards Larry.

hiya,
Haven’t smoked for donkeys years, but when I did you wouldn’t have
wanted to drive my motor for a while after I’d parked up, but after
saying that I don’t remember many drivers who didn’t smoke, every
motor I got hold of had been a smokers and of course to have to use
mine and if you was a non-smoker it wouldn’t have been very pleasant,
I was doing about 60 a day packets and roll-ups, but it was very rare to
encounter me on the move with the drivers window closed and that was
Summer and Winter alike, proper driver eh’.
thanks harry, long retired.

Quite agree Harry, smoking was a common thing among drivers and a lot of other jobs. One old boy used to smoke a pipe and chew tobacco on one firm I worked for.His cab resembled a farmyard and nobody even the ■■■ smokers enjoyed driving his lorry.
Cheers Dave.

Aye , Harry proper drivers, with hard callousis on their hands, weatherbeaten faces that could take anything & everthing in their stride, Mind you I met some tossers that thought they were better at their job than us oldies were, But of course they were, they sat behind a desk writing our delivery notes out, Well lets face it they had a hard job sharpening their pencils, Whereas we were sharp at everything, getting up in the middle of the night to go to work didnt exist in their book, We have done it all Harry, Not easey at times but the nice thing is we are still here to talk about it, I enjoyed my period on long distance work, & still do, but I drink more than I drive now, which Im doing this very moment, I wont disclose what Im drinking, but Im sure you can guess, I will give you a clue, its from Scotland, I hope to see you at the drivers get together, Ive got that malt I bought when I went to Lossiemouth, The hip flask is ready now, Regards Larry.

I worked for many years with an old driver who smoked all his life, Capstain (?) Full Strength AND a pipe with Ogdens Thick twist. never ailed a thing until he died…90. Cliff Waiwright, a grand old fella, never married but he enjoyed life.
Me? I’ve never smoked.

hiya,
As well as being a smoker from age 14, I did from age 15 work as an
underground worker which got me into the mucky habit of chewing
tobacco which I did until age 18 when I chucked the pit and I was
quickly called up for National Service, a bit extreme to help break
away from a dirty habit but it worked for a couple of years until i
had to return to the pit for a year because I was too young to be a
proper driver and started chewing again.

Myself I have not had a ciggarette since 1969, used to like a King Edward on the middle east, not had one of those for over 30 years.
Often when asked if I smoke,
I reply " Never had ■■■ that fast to smoke!
