Old Wagons You Could Still Use

No, Harry. I’m not trying to teach you anything mate.
Just different memories

When someone says they’d prefer to drive one of the oldies I ask when was the last time they did? People often say to me how they’d love to drive an old 143 and when asked when they last drove them the answer is normally when they were still made. We have a 97 143 and a 92 F10 and while good fun for a while after a day you’re more than happy to get back in the comfortable modern lorry. Like someone said go back and drive some of these oldies and you’re illusions and memories from the past as to how good they were would soon be shattered.

Very good point. Altough I see the joy of driving old vehicles as a hobby from time to time…

So I would not like to use anything older in my every day work, but I would be happy to have one of this

for a weekend off road fun.

Oh I agree about the hobby, that’s why I have a 35 year old VW campervan that I love to bits. But if I was to do a daily commute or if I just want to get somewhere I use my Mini Cooper S. I’d love a classic truck one day too

Nothing wrong with a Mammoth Major 8 wheeler, good on site and fast on the way to the tip,any Foden or ERF with ■■■■■■■■ engine Eaton or Fuller g/box, the Scammel Crusader,Leyland Marathon(later versions) the Roadtrain and last of all the Ford Transconti(the first ones I saw where run by the Irish boys and they seem to know a good motor)

Old trucks I would stil be happy with?
DAF 95 400
DAF 95 430 (STGO Cat 3)
ERF C series
ERF E10
Merc 1635
and yes
My Iveco Eurotech- that done more miles than the rest put together

the ones you coudnt pay enough to get back into
Seddon Atkinson 401 and 411 horrible nasty bits of kit

A Buckingham based od we use runs a K reg Foden 3000 series 8w, it’s looking its’ age and is on it’s second tipping body (a secondband Bardon Aggs one) but the lady who owns it keeps it going on scrapyard bits and doesn’t pick and choose the work she does unlike many subbies we use with much newer vehicles., nor does she cry about poor rates. When the work is slack during winter she parks it up and goes on holiday, knowing it’s paid for unlike most ods wagons. It might be slow getting going but only Nolans will pass it on the motorway…
…It carries more than other subbies’ wagons too, about 21t.

I don’t think that I :grimacing: would choose any of the old trucks over a modern one for a days work, but if just for a bit of nostalgia,
I wouldn’t mind playing with, Guy Big J4T, Scania 110, Ford Transcontinental 4435 and finally a Scamell Townsman for a few miles.

a big j 4t like the one in my avatar it has a 240 8 pot Gardner engine done 74 mph on the flat but others would disagree

old gezer thats me started on Bedford TK moved on through Sedon Atkis Mercs MAN then Iveco Alto cab FH12 then had a go at running a Guest House (not for me) now driving A merc Axor nice to drive you have to be like trained monkey to have nights out in it easier in the old TK don,t wont to go back to those day though Hopefully new job next week and back to a FH12

F10 every time

my first truck after passing my test a little leyland freighter 4 wheeler for nostalgic reasons. then volvo f88 even with the bumpy suspension, the leyland roadtrain with rolls royce engine, mercedes powerliner for comfort and most scanias

You could use most trucks still even as far back as the 50s , question is would you want to.

We all look back with rose tinted glasses to the early days of our careers but as has been said, if we got into the trucks now they wouldnt be as good as we remember.

I started on Bedford TKs and Ford D series trucks and thought they were great at the time, till I progressed to Leyland Cruisers and Roadtrains. Again i thought they were great and a vast improvement until I progressed again to a Scania 141, a Volvo F10 and F12, a DAF 3600 Space Cab, and even a Seddon Atkinson Strato. All these pale into insignificance compared to the MAN TGA XXL i drive now.

That said I would love an old truck just for shows and leisure time, but whether I’d like to take a trip across Europe in an Iveco 190-38 again? Nah dont think so

Probably the earliest Id use would be an F10, although I wouldnt mind a go in a Crusader or a Marathon. I think I had the rose tinted spectacles knocked well and truly off my face when I took a 50s Leyland Hippo for a jaunt in the 80s. Made me realise what the old boys had to put up with.

There could be one more option. Old vehicle with modern hardware in old body. Say take this: youtube.com/watch?v=UGEV3tcqBP4

Such toy could work well as PR excercise for courier company for example…

Lets face it, it’s nice to remenice but the fact is I wouldn’t go back to driving one from the past.
I drive a modern, powerful, comfortable hgv, with all the bells and whistles!
Anyone who says they would swap are maddd!

1994, 500bhp with 2150nm of torque, room to stand with a good heater & air-con, 3.6m WB with air suspension;

I stuck the trade plates on & moved a loaded road barrel a few miles recently & it definately pulles better than the Stralis 480 I drive at the moment, in fact it feels like it’s trying to ‘wheelie’ through the low range gears!!

I’d go to work in this.

Ross.

Imagine if this thread was written in the 80s and you turned up in a 2012 motor, how many people wouldn’t swap

recon its what you class as an old wagon…for me its one from the 50& 60s early 70s.
and for others its 80& 90s…
but as someone who drives a 90s wagon daily at 53+tons & until this yr a 80s redimix truck. good- no electrics to go wrong ,solidy built… bad-- a fair bit noisier, not as easy to work on.
jimmy

The newest truck that I drove was a P registered Foden 3000 series eight legger so I guess that anything newer than that would be a big change for me then! However what you haven’t had you wont miss so I would happily get back in it tomorrow and carry on as I did back then, it had an air seat, a cb and a radio so I would be just fine! :sunglasses: I wonder if I could still fiddle the limiter by switching the key back to the accessory position, ah the memories ha ha.

Pete.

Muckaway:
What old school lorries would you be happy to do a days’ work with? Aside from Foden 3 and 4000 series (naturally  )
I’d be happy to drive a Merc SK. I’d love to say a Leyland Bison but I fear that might start the Rose Tinters calling for AEC Mammoth Majors!! :stuck_out_tongue:

Anything with out a digi or a limiter !!

Oh, and GPS or mobile phone…

It may surprise some, but I would go with a Scania 3-Series, probably a 113m 320 on store delivery (I’m a store delivery Driver). I used to love running out of Tesco Fenny Lock or Kiln Farm with them. Also Volvo F7 8-wheeler as I used to feed off the roar of that TD70G engine when I was an early 20’s something tipper driver. Perhaps also a Leyland Roadtrain with an Eaton TS - as per Royal Mail era. Anyone remember the Seddi Atki’s that Royal Mail Streamline had with the super growly Eminox’s on them??
