Old North East haulage companies (Part 1)

I only saw one motor in the yard as I passed at 3 O’clock, not a lot going on in there although the yard is still full of all sorts of vehicles and gear, I’ll have a look Monday to see if they have much of the fleet parked up, unless its already gone. Franky.

Is Ainscough,s Crane Hire still in the yard ? Ive not seen many of them knocking about recently, Regards Larry.

I heard that shorts aren’t packing in completely. just downsizing, getting rid of some of the older motors and trailers, concentrating on some of the better paying jobs. I’m not sure if this info is correct though. could just be hearsay. I would like to think its correct as Shorts are one of the few “proper companies” left in the game. Dan

Ainscough are not there anymore, I believe they moved to Washington a couple of years ago, not sure exactly where.

Well Sam Anderson has been in the haulage game a long long time, They took Shorties over 83ish, both my sons worked in the fitting shop in those days, they went there from leaving school. Ken Short IMO was a real nice bloke, the problems he had he had some right awkward blokes working for him, but the majority of his workforce were good. I remember one RSOLE that was the union man shouting his mouth off in Normans one night that he would put him out of business if he did not meet his demands, Well I ask you who would listen to such crap, alas one or two of them did. In the end Ken Short told me that he had had enough & wanted out, who could blame him, Shorties was a long established family company who employed some of the best drivers going, plus a lot of them worked there for years, So thats it all gone sadley to say, Regards Larry.

Im sure there must be a few of Shorties still about like myself, Kieth Janes, Davy Coke, Ralphy Fearns, Joe Duffy, John McCall. Charlie Jamieson,Jimmy Logan. Jimmy Corner, Les Davison, & a few more that I cant put names to, Regards Larry.

hiya franky i never forget the friday nights me your dad jimmy simmons we used to come to your house in longbenton after we had been in the ship for a drink i think the driver your are on about was joe frain and geordie collis mate was bob aitchie regards jimmy.

Aye Jim I recall my Mother nearly having a fit when she saw me Fatha almost fall out the wagon after a session in the Ship, he wasn’t a big drinker anyway but how he got home that night! Unbelievable what was done in those days. Jim do you remember when Simmons’y had that old man and his Grandson drive head on into him killing them both outright, they couldn’t figure out why, the old man hadn’t took bad, Jimmy seemed to think he’d done it on purpose, thesedays the driver of the wagon would get arrested. Bob Aitch told me once he was chuffed when he got my old mans Seddon even though it was slow, no power steering and a lot older, said he felt like a proper trucker then, smashing lad shame he’s not still around. Haven’t got a proper pic of the real motor built this model years ago, bit of Photoshop done to put it infront of the old archway. Cheers Franky.

Aye F]D, I remember Steenburghs having a new Seddon in 1956, I was a rounded off sort of cab, possibley made of fibreglass, Regards Larry, PS. I caught a glimpse of Lennie North in Morrisons a few weeks ago, He allways claimed to be the top man at Steenburghs, HA HA.

hiya larry i see you mentioned lenny north i first met lenny when he worked for charlie shepard at british paints at blaydon he drove a leyland comet with a scammel coupling and a fifth wheel converter we wher taken the overhead cranes out for shepards scrapyard on walker road regards jimmy

franky isee you wher on about shortys ending my other half and i where traveling south on the a1 on thursday morning 17 5 th when we saw two of shorts scanias heading north past felton regards jimmy

Aye Jim, wonder if they were going to stay up in Scotland once they got there, shame when the old names go even if they don’t belong to the original haulier. I remember when Lenny started at Ouseburn, course I was only a lad then anyway, much later when I left Steenburgs after my short driving spell there at the end of 1989 it was the beginning of the end for Ouseburn, only Lenny, Bob Dowling and Cliff Natton, both old hands also, were left. Even Jimmy Bell the fitter had gone on to Spillers and I done a bit fitting in his place for them as the 401 I had went to the auctions a few weeks before, I can’t recall now the full reg of that Seddon Aki but it was B…GTN and it reminded me of Dads old Seddon reg GTN 412C, wasn’t exactly the same reg’s in reverse, the numbers were similar but I can’t remember the order they went now, it might come back! Jimmy was that F86 the one Alan Patrick got new, I’m not sure if there was only one bought. I only had one trip in that when me Fatha had it for a little spell (Alan might have been on holiday) but it was a nice motor, a sign of things to come. Cheers Franky

hiya franky im not quite but i think steenburgs had three f86 s the other driver was called kenny hogg i remember calling to the garage beside byker bridge and stan bell was trying to put a patch on the side off the side of engine block on a f86 and i just started to laugh at him the other seddon unit like your fathas was hvk 713 d which went to ponteland haulage regards jimmy

Cheers for that Jim, I remember HVK 713D and Kenny, his Brother Ray also worked there, nice lads, infact most were it must have been a great place to be a driver in those days. Jim you might remember, who did Ollie marry (think it was Olaf that married her) that owned or had something to do with the Ford Dealers and part of the reason Fords always featured in the fleet, I thought it was Cross… something but not sure. Cheers Franky.

Hello Larry,
Ken and Fred are still about,Ken had seen Les Baston in Blyth last week and asked if i would contact him, they served Fergusons well over the years,Good reliable drivers.
i cant remember if Fred came from Tommy Dodds when Fergusons took them over or he came from Frank Dodds with the tippers.Im sure i can remember Fred driving a Guy big J 6 wheeler for Frank Dodds on the fly ash out of Blyth Power Station to the coast road and the spine road when they were being constructed about 1969/1970.
